England should follow Scotland and Wales and ban smacking, says children’s tsar

  1. Can’t believe you can just assault small people because they are under 18 and it isn’t counted as domestic violence

  2. The words ‘child’ and tsar should never be used in the same sentence let alone as a position of responsibility in any democratic country.

  3. I’m actually quite shocked that is isn’t already banned!

smacking kids teaches them that violence is an appropriate social response, and it also opens up the potential for abuse – if you’re allowed a light smack are you allowed a heavy smack?… when are you allowed to smack?… it’s all a matter of degrees, and there should be no leniency when it comes to child abuse

  4. What my dad would do (in public) was take my hand, and crush it to fuck. I keep remembering stuff, I’m gonna have to find him and make it right.

  5. I agree with it, but it’s such a pointless law that doesn’t really make much sense, or appear to be very enforceable.

Are you allowed to give them a tap on the bum? Well yeah, still obviously.

Are you allowed to smack them hard enough to leave a mark? No, and thats already the case without a smacking law. If your kid has bruises etc, it should be flagged to safe guarding.

Laws should only exist to be enforced imo, rather than to create good headlines.

  6. We still need a lot of people to come around to the idea that just because they were hit as a child does not mean it should be OK to hit future generations. We banned corporal punishment in schools without seeing any serious consequences, we can do the same with smacking.

  7. This never going to be banned. It’s too useful as a method of teaching us to comply with the state’s monopoly on violence during the formation of our personalities.
