  1. Sorry Balkan gang. This time Greece and Portugal abandoned you /s

    Edit: also Walloons are you ok?

  2. So Lithuanians will live shorter as Romanians, Bulgarians and Russians(not pictured)? That’s disturbing and sad.

  3. The interesting part is, that the life expectancy seems to be the highest for people living close to the sea.

    In med school I’ve already learned that over 5 years ago, with the highest life expectancy being around Rome and in Japan. The theory is that this is at least partly caused by a higher uptake of fish, which influenced the “mediterranean diet” as being the most healthy and medically recommended diet.

    The shown map seems to support that theory.

  4. These statistics are somewhat influenced by whether a premature baby that dies soon after birth is considered a stillbirth (i.e. not counted) or as an infant death (0 years, which brings down the average lifespan).[This paper](https://academic.oup.com/eurpub/article/32/2/200/6528409) lists different rules used by different countries to determine whether live births are counted (supplemental table S1). A few examples:

    * Belgium: pregnancy lasted at least 154 days (22 weeks)
    * Spain: pregnancy lasted at least 180 days (25.7 weeks)
    * Austria: 500+ grams.
    * Bulgaria: 800+ grams and/or 26 weeks
