France: Jellyfish force French nuclear plant shutdown • FRANCE 24 English

These jellyfish have shut down a nuclear plant. The French nuclear plant of Gralin was fully shut down for 2 days. Its reactors automatically stopped because of the numerous jellyfish stuck in the filter drums of the pumping stations. The proliferation of jellyfish is due to the warming of the oceans, but also to over fishing, which eliminates some of their direct predators like tuna. One unit in what is Western Europe’s largest nuclear power plant has restarted, but four others are still paralyzed. [Music]

⚡ A nuclear plant in northern France was temporarily shut down on Monday after a swarm of jellyfish clogged pumps used to cool the reactors.  ☣️ The automatic shutdowns of four units “had no impact on the safety of the facilities, the safety of personnel, or the environment”, energy group EDF said on its website. 💶 The halt could have financial consequences for EDF: a single day of reactor shutdown amounts to $1.16 mln in losses for the energy provider, according to Reuters.

  1. Countries will need to lay out visible border on the water so rogue ships do not enter and fish illegally
