EU upholds €2.4 billion antitrust fine against Google

  1. Why are fines against mega corporations so low?

We need a law where fines get progressively bigger against bigger corporations. If Google still profits even after the fine, then they will keep pulling stunts like this.

  2. I wonder how much the US will reply to these cases. You just know google will be already asking congress to look into some form of retaliation.

  3. Ok, it is fine to throttle the uncompetitive position that Google holds on the market that they invented.

However, it’s now high time to move on and that Europe starts to rekon all that is nefarious in that business model.

A good start would be to have the public administrations assessing the *real* costs of using “free” softwares and services from *Alphabet, inc*.

(I’m pretty sure that this is possible even without breaching the terms of the WTO, which *must* be completely revamped anyway, long story.)

  4. YES. USE YOUR POWER.

Europe United is a powerful world entity, and we need to start understanding that. Divided we are weak, but together, we genuinely have as much power as any.

  5. We (EU) are obsessed with American tech companies rather it be Reddit, YouTube, Wikipedia, or most of the streaming services. The list goes on and on.

The reality is what we’re doing is empowering a country that’s barely even a friend of the EU anymore instead of empowering ourselves. It reminds me of how Germany chose China’s 5G network instead of Nokia that needed just a bit more time. We dont invest nearly enough in ourselves. People wonder why China and the US are so far ahead in many economic terms, just dumbfounded.

Reddit is a prime example. It was created and still owned by Americans but also partially owned by the Chinese now. The better example of shifting power to EU if we cant compete is to FAIRLY buy companies out like Ray-Ban or powertool lines like Dremel. Both were American, both are now European and extremely successful worldwide.

You can make a difference buy choosing where you spend your time online and what services you use but 99% of people including myself wont make any real changes because the allure is too addictive.

    Trump: Sad!

  6. eu wants a slice of those profits;) it’s. really not about any monopoly… the real monopols are the governments…

  7. ITT : people who don’t understand the difference between profit and revenue. No, it’s not a crippling fine (it’s not supposed to be), but people pretending it’s irrelevant are just clueless.

  8. Just a shame the EU only gave apple a slap on the wrist when they formed a cartel to illegally fix ebook prices.

Then again the other members of the cartel were the great and the good of European publishing, what does that tell you.
