Hello! My great grandparents are Norwegian. To that end, I’ve spent the last two summers exploring Norway, learning about my heritage, etc. I noticed in some people’s homes they have wall hangings similar to the above.
I was hoping someone might be able to point me in the direction of an authentic kit to make something like this. Anything I’ve found is a bit kitsch and/or playing up to tourist type tastes. I’d like to make it myself, to learn the craft.
Also open to any other traditional craft that might be recommended!
Thank you!

This is called åkle. I dont know if they sell kits, you might be able to find patterns, and the hardware.. i guess they used Aida or some kind of canvas, and of course yarn.
In Norwegian, åkle refers to a patterned woven carpet or coverlet traditionally used as a bedspread or to decorate walls.
This looks like a “klokkestreng” , In the better off households where they had strings (I have no idea what the correct term is)to call for the help, – they decorated them with these. (The strings, not the help😏)
In the 60s they became populare as decorations.
This is a klokkestreng,in the old days it was used to ring a bell. Some have suggested a åkle but an åkle was used as a bedsheet in the old days and its much bigger then this
I would say klokkestreng is a type of åkle. Or a combination of the two. But maybe thats just me.. i dont really care to argue.
