Trump increases India tariffs to 50% for buying Russian oil • FRANCE 24 English

India, an energy starved country, has been hit with an ultimatum. Stop buying Russian oil or face tariffs in the United States as high as 50%. The US president signed the executive order on Wednesday to impose an additional 25% on Indian goods. Following through on a threat he made earlier in the week on social media, they don’t care how many people in Ukraine are being killed by the Russian war machine. Because of this, I will be substantially raising the tariff paid by India to the USA. The order comes just 2 days before Trump’s deadline for Russia to reach a peace deal with Ukraine and is set to go into effect 21 days after it was signed. A deadline which also falls conspicuously ahead of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Mod’s planned trip to China, the first in over seven years. India, China, and Russia are founding countries in the bricks trading block alongside Brazil, which also faces 50% US tariffs. Bricks, the BRICS nations. Trump has previously criticized BRICS as being antitheed, putting India in an uncomfortable spot. A spokesperson for India’s foreign ministry rebuked the latest announcement, saying that India’s overall objective is the energy security of its 1.4 4 billion people and that it was unjustified to single out one country. It is therefore extremely unfortunate that the US should choose to impose additional tariffs on India for actions that several other countries are also taking in their own national interest. India will take all actions necessary to protect its national interests. If the 50% tariffs go ahead, India’s key export sectors such as textiles, footwear, and jewelry are expected to be hard hit, dragging down India’s economic prospects.

  3. This tariff denudes India's strategy to cosey up to the US and to pose as competitor to China. Trump pulls the rug out from under India's feet, shows India's posture as hollow. It's the end of India's China+1 aspirations. Electronics is exempt but it's not enough.

  6. India has other options too. India should trade with those countries which are banned by the US, such as Iran, North Korea, as well as India should cancel all the deals with the US for now.😅

  15. Trump is just doing the same shxt to India now that they did with us (China) back in 2018. We knew the US would eventually turn on India like they turned on everyone else, it's just surprising to see it happen so soon. But we know who unilaterally started this economic war, and it isn't India. Trump is trying extort the entire world – EU, Japan, Canada, Mexico, etc. No one is spared. We buy Russian oil ourselves. When the US tried to coerce us to stop buying oil from Russia and Iran back in 2018, we simply told them to fxxx off. Let's be clear: while our own relations with India may not be problem free (they aren't unsolvable either), there is only one side we will back here, and that is India. They didn't start this.

Russian oil was being sanctioned and Russia have to look for other big buyers within short notice. India makes fully use of Russia's plight and took the opportunity to reach a deal with Russia, a deal which benefits India more than Russia (heavily discounted Russian oil selling below market rate). Arnaud Bertrand said, "India increased its imports of Russian oil by a staggering 1,800% since before the war in Ukraine, whilst China increased its import of Russian oil by 43%" China has increased their import of Russian oil by only 43%, which is considered normal in the normal course of business, just to help a troubled neighbor and as a small courtesy. Meanwhile, India increase their imports of Russian oil by 1,800% to take fully advantage of Russia-Ukraine war. Whole world knows who is the greedy one here. Ukranians should take note that India always has a axe to grind with Ukraine and Europeans would be much better off buying Russian oil directly from Russia if the end result is still buying Russian oil. There is no need to go through a dishonest middle man which charges a premium for the same Russian oil.

US has entered into a massive oil deal with Pakistan while it continues to supply Pakistan with weapons. 😑😑😑 Also, why does the US continue to buy uranium, palladium, chemicals and fertilizers from Russia ??   31. Indian GDP is around 4500 billion and US tax affects 45 billion only, so its around 1% only. Medicine mobile are the balance export items to USA, those are not taxed.
