Soviet Monuments Come Down Across Europe

  1. >Statues and memorials built to glorify and commemorate the Soviet Union and the Red Army have been torn down — in one case illegally, in several countries amid outrage at the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

    >On the same day workers in Kyiv dismantled a Soviet-era monument to friendship between Ukraine and Russia on April 26, far to the north in Latvia a Red Army memorial stone was being pulled out of the ground.

    >The following photos show the destruction of Soviet monuments — which many see as symbolic of historical Kremlin oppression — that has taken place across Europe since Russia launched its invasion of Ukraine on February 24.

  2. When the war in Ukraine broke out, a Red Army memorial in my town got a big banner to show what people here really think of such memorials. The sign said: “thank you for your enslavement” + had an image of a Red Army soldier with a devious smile behind a woman’s back, basically suggesting a rape scene. Spray paint signs like “demolish it” were also present.

So yea, the we are past day 60 now and the banner is just proof of how wide-awake people around here are. They knew things like looting, raping and pillaging may come to Ukraine – Red Army style all the way.

That’s also why so many people in the East and Central Europe oppose communism so much and hate the sickle and hammer symbol – it is banned by the law in some of the countries. It’s an equivalent of the “Z” letter.

  3. The Soviets were no angels by far, but without them Europe would have been under complete Nazi control and without anyone that could challenge Nazi Germany. Above all, without the very same Soviets that r/europe is bashing, millions of people would have been quite literally exterminated just because of their ethnic background. Once again, I understand that Soviet occupation of Eastern Europe was a harsh time and a lot of people suffered, but this is just disgusting. Now I understand why so many people cheer for literal Azov nazis in Mariupol that have committed many attrocities across Eastern Ukraine starting in 2014. Nazism was thankfully defeated in 1945, but some of its ideas of the superiority of Western Europeans is still very present even today. Quite frankly, as I am writing this, I just know that I will be called a Russian bot, as it is the only response that Western Europeans and Americans use when someone dares to slightly disagree with their opinions remotely related to Russia. My stance in all of this is neutral, but such censorship of news coming from the “other side” (Russia), the constant attacks on everything connected to Russia (literature, art, sports etc) is very similair to what a certain country was doing to a certain people back in the 1930s before something big happened.
