Italian children should get both parents’ surnames, court says

  1. >Children should be given both parents’ surnames in the order they decide, unless they agree their children should take just one of them, the court added in a statement.

I wonder if the court stated an age when the children are considered to be able to decide about surnames.

  2. In Portugal we get the father’s surname as our surname and mother’s middle name as our middle name.

For example, my full name has 3 words, my middle name comes from my mother’s middle name and my surname comes from my father’s surname.

  3. Italian kids 5 generations later chilling with 64 surnames

  4. Fortunately it is not required to give both names. It seems this has more to do with the default being automatically giving the child the father’s last name (as opposed to the mothers or both).

Also, imagine parents with the same surname 😅

  5. This sounds quite radical and stupid when you read the headline, as if every child must have both parents names double barrelled. When you actually read it, it’s just “most kids will probably take their Dad’s name, as is tradition, if that’s what the parents decide, but it won’t be mandatory and automatic”.

  6. Generation one: Giorgio Verdi Giancarlo

Generation 2: Mauricio Verdi Giancarlo Gucci frateli.

Generation 3: Antonio Verdi Giancarlo Gucci frateli Vincenzo Bianci Colombo Greco

Generation 12: not enough space in the universe to
Store the characters required for the surnames of a single Italian.

  7. So they went from “the kid gets the father’s surname automatically” to “the kid gets both surnames”, which is pretty fucking dumb. Just let the parents decide which surname it gets. if they can’t decide, give it both surnames. Kids are going to have 8 surnames eventually.

  8. Some of you have no idea of how surnames in Spain work.

Name+ father’s surname+mother’s surname. You can put mom’s surname first but not many people do it. Just that.

I don’t know why some of you see this like an ultracomplicated system. In Spain women don’t have to change their surname when they marry.

  9. In France chose the one you wants for your kids or both (in the order you like), only rule is all the siblings should have the same .
