The Finnish Defense Forces (FDF) and the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) have jointly placed an order for Cognitive Networked HF (CNHF) manpack radios from Finnish manufacturer KNL. The total value of the order is around 15 million euros. Delivery is scheduled for the end of 2025.

This order is the first joint procurement under the NORDEFCO agreement signed in April 2025 for the joint procurement of C4I systems. The agreement is an important milestone for Nordic defense cooperation: it creates a strategic framework for interoperable communications, common situational awareness, decision support and intelligence capabilities. As a result, Finnish and Swedish armed forces are coordinated from the first day of deployment.

“In recent years, the Finnish Armed Forces have conducted a comprehensive and demanding evaluation of the shortwave radio solutions available on the market. Our operational requirements call for an HF communication system – consisting of fixed equipment and portable devices with a uniform waveform – that is both powerful and reliable and fits seamlessly into the existing C4I architecture. We are convinced that KNL’s CNHF system fully meets these current and future requirements. By jointly procuring the CNHF manpacks, we also strengthen Nordic defense cooperation and increase joint operational capabilities in all branches of the Armed Forces and Special Forces,” said Major General Jarmo Vähätiitto, Head of C5 in the FDF Joint Staff.
