1. Newsom to make major announcement Thursday in redistricting battle with Trump, Republicans
California Governor Gavin Newsom says President Donald Trump has “missed” the deadline to call off Texas Republicans from redrawing their congressional maps mid-decade, and that California will now respond in kind.
Earlier this week, the governor sent a letter to the president, issuing an ultimatum: stop Texas Republicans from redistricting, or California would initiate the same process. But on Tuesday evening, Newsom said in very Trumpian language, the president was too little, too late.
“Donald ‘Taco’ Trump, as many call him, ‘missed’ the deadline!!! California will now draw new, more ‘beautiful maps,’ they will be historic as they will end the Trump presidency (Dems take back the House!),” Newsom’s office posted on X in all capital letters. “Big press conference this week with powerful Dem[ocrat]s and Gavin Newsom — your favorite governor — that will be devastating for ‘MAGA.’ Thank you for your attention to this matter!”
The press conference is now scheduled for 11:30 a.m. PT in Los Angeles, where Newsom’s office promises “payback” for Texas’ maps.
2. Judge weighs whether Trump violated federal law by deploying National Guard to LA
A federal judge in San Francisco is weighing whether the Trump administration violated federal law by sending National Guard troops to accompany immigration agents on raids in Southern California. A three-day trial on the matter concluded Wednesday.
California has argued the troops violated the Posse Comitatus Act, which generally prohibits military enforcement of domestic laws. Lawyers for the administration said the law doesn’t apply because President Donald Trump called up the National Guard under an authority that allows their deployment if “the president is unable with the regular forces to execute the laws of the United States.”
Federal and military officials were called to testify, and the trial’s third day largely focused on weedy arguments about the 1878 law and whether the court even had a role in determining the limits of presidential power.
Trump deployed 4,000 National Guard members and later 700 Marines to Los Angeles in June after protests in response to immigration raids around the city.
3. LA County enacts plan to boost school attendance ahead of new academic year
With the new school year underway in some area schools, the Los Angeles County Office of Education began a coordinated effort Wednesday to boost student attendance and help children thrive in school.
During a news conference at Madison Elementary School in Pomona, County Superintendent of Schools Debra Duardo said the campaign will include a new toolkit to build awareness on the importance of attendance. Additionally, an updated student playbook will be circulated, described as a comprehensive roadmap to address the persistent challenge of chronic absenteeism in schools.
According to the Office of Education, both are extensive resources for districts and schools to promote consistent attendance throughout the year, based on data findings and evidence-backed strategies.
The toolkit includes customizable communication materials, data tracking tips, strategies for engaging families and resources to connect students with health and social services.

Silicon Valley startup unveils Robocar for private ownership
Imagine going out to a crowded concert, being dropped off at the entrance and sending the car that got you there to find a parking space without you personally needing to drive it. Then, imagine exiting that concert and having your car drive itself to pick you up and take you home.
The AI company Tensor envisions a world where that’s possible. On Wednesday, the Silicon Valley startup unveiled what it says is the world’s first personal autonomous vehicle for private ownership.
