Slovakia’s coalition government has agreed to compensate households for the price of gas and electricity to limit price rises in 2026, a measure that will cost the budget 435 million euros next year, Prime Minister Robert Fico said on Thursday.

The government office said the compensation would reach 90% of households and that energy bills would rise by a third without it.

The government has continued to provide support to households hit by shocks after a surge in energy prices that followed Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

At the same time, it has sought to tackle one of the euro zone’s biggest budget deficits. Ruling parties are due to continue talks next week on deficit-cutting measures as part of their consolidation efforts.
