One other reason is weak family ties, far too many Finnish families are dysfunctional.
I.e. one of the parents is alcoholic/abusive, children don’t get enough attention so they grow up in violence and become avoidant adults. Avoidant attachment personality is very common in Finland.
Many Finns are deeply lonely, but they avoid human contacts because they’re afraid of being rejected or made fun of.
If people have a healthy childhood and proper support system, they are less likely to become violent.
Pretty much all crimes are pretty well accepted in Finland, not just violent crime. The only thing our justice system does well is having fines based on income. Other than that there is not really any punishment for most crimes.
The prison sentences are a joke and mostly an insult towards all the victims, add to that the fact that it takes ages before the cases get closed/solved/sentenced. It can take years for the victim to try and get justice only for the sentence to be so small that it’s basicly a slap on the wrists for the criminal and big fuck you to the victim.
edit: facts are less important to people than their feelings. That is absolutely clear. While crime statistics do NOT show any need for harsher sentences you still hate ANYONE who says we don’t. Your feelings are literally more important than reality. And that is very sad, that is very much against the principles the whole country has been built upon.

* **Overall Violent Crime:**While the number of reported violent crimes has fluctuated, the general trend since the early 1990s has been a decrease in homicides.
* **Homicide:**Homicide rates in Finland have significantly decreased since the early 1990s, reaching a low point in 2023.
* **Assaults:**Assault offenses have remained relatively stable in the last decade (2014-2023), [according to a University of Helsinki report](https://tuhat.helsinki.fi/ws/portalfiles/portal/578457929/Crime_trends_in_Finland2024.pdf).
* **Sexual Offenses:**There has been an increase in recorded rape offenses and sexual offenses against children, partly due to legislative changes broadening definitions.
* **Robberies:**A 17.9% increase in robbery offenses was reported in 2023, according to Statistics Finland.
* **Factors in Violent Crime:**Marginalized males, particularly those with alcohol problems, are overrepresented in homicide cases. Younger victims of homicide are often linked to drugs and criminal activity.
* **Alcohol’s Role:**While alcohol’s influence on violent crime has decreased, it remains a factor in many violent offenses.
* **Regional Variations:**Some cities, like Vantaa and Turku, have been identified as having higher rates of serious violent crime in public places, according to a report by the National Police Board.
* **Young People and Crime:**Young people are increasingly involved as suspects in violent crime cases, according to the National Police Board.
* **Increased Reporting:**Increases in certain crime categories, like sexual offenses and robberies, may also be influenced by increased reporting rate
In other words, there is no problems that would demand harsher sentences. Fucking special prosecutors who want harsher sentences because THEY FEEL that current line is too lenient. He has no evidence to back up his FEELINGS. What i see here is a man, an individual with enough experience and knowledge to know that he should never make such statements because he FEELS something is wrong. He has authority, people listen to him, he has a duty to stick to facts and results, the truth. This shows lack of professionalism, if anything.
A lot of us FEEL that sentences are too lenient. Me too. I don’t give a fuck about my feelings, they have no place in this topic. We look at results and do whatever works the best. So, you, dear reader: did you already downvote or are you like me and say “fuck my feelings, they are not important at all”?
Should we change things because people FEEL or should we just do whatever works? Isn’t that the Finnish way, after all, and those who operate on feelings will just create chaos since feelings change like the wind.
Somebody gets it!
Judges basically laugh at rape victims but lose their shit at tax fraud judging by their sentences. Justice system is designed to protect only the rich and powerful.

Who else saw the preview image and thought it was of a violent criminal
This btw is common in all Nordic countries, it has to do with the weirdness of the nordic mentality, and the mindset. In some ways, this can be argued to be a cultural result that needs to be corrected by european standards such as ECHR rulings.
The lizard people…
Maybe crime in general is more rare so there’s less of a cultural push to penalize it? Finland is a high trust society and that necessitates being low on crime imho
“he noted that a judge, or a prosecutor, cannot change the legal system on their own.”
“The second option is for the Supreme Court to give instructions to lower courts that more severe punishments should be given in cases of assault.”
So what you’re saying is supreme court judges can, in fact, change the legal system on their own?
