  1. Republicans have long since burned down any semblance of good faith. Go scorched earth and don’t look back.

  2. I don’t like Newsom that much but if you’re a democrat and you’re not going scorched earth at this point then get out of the way

  3. Come on Pritzker, if you want to stay in the 2028 conversation, as Newsom said, Illinois needs to get this moving too.

  4. Beshear, Pritzker and the rest need to follow his leads. Newsom is showing us he’s the leader of the resistance!

  5. You don’t debate rot.

    You don’t compromise with rot.

    You don’t coexist with rot.

    You cut it out.

    You burn it away.

You destroy every trace before it spread further.

Finally, a fucking Democrat doing something right.

  6. Just curious, can California state reps do the same thing there that Texas Dems did and break quorum there?

Don’t get me wrong, I hope Newsom can follow though with his fighting fire with fire approach on redistricting, but on one hand if the California GOP does the same that can have a positive effect as well… in so much as it shows just how utterly ridiculous this whole song and dance is, and shows how necessary the need for non partisan and independent bodies to draw fair districts are.

But the GOP will never allow that to happen in any Red State so, fuck ‘em. Godspeed Gavin.

  7. Newsom and Pritzker are the only ones fighting fascism right now.

  8. LFG. I’m voting yes. This is a majority blue state.

We should take JD Vance’s advice and govern by wielding our power

  9. I don’t get why people don’t like Newsom. He’s the only one I’m seeing actually push back with action against this orange piece of shit.

  10. I’d vote yes.

“The move comes as Republicans in Texas, with President Donald Trump’s backing, are pursuing a new congressional map that would allow them to gain up to five more House seats.

“It’s not complicated. We’re doing this in reaction to a president of the United States that called a sitting governor of the state of Texas and said, ‘find me five seats,'” Newsom said. “We’re doing it in reaction to that act. We’re doing it mindful of our higher angels and better angels. We’re doing it mindful that we want to model better behavior, as we’ve been doing for 15 years in the state of California with our independent redistricting commission. But we cannot unilaterally disarm.”

California Democrats need approval from others in to sidestep the state’s independent redistricting commission, and the clock is ticking for lawmakers to approve a ballot initiative for this year’s Nov. 4 election. If the measure passes, it would allow new maps to be enacted in time for the 2026 midterm elections.”

  11. Newsome is the governor we NEED right now and I’m 100% LOVING it. We need more and more governors of blue states to start fighting fire with fucking fire.

  12. It’s still not official, but this would be the closest thing Democrats have done to “going on the offensive” that I’ve seen in years, maybe my lifetime. It’s about time they get off their heels and try to put Republicans off balance for once. Texas GOP figured they could get away with it because Democrats always fold. It’s well past time to put pressure on them instead.

  13. Every so often a corporate democrat does something right. This is one of those times.

Fuck the criminal child-trafficking/rape cult that is MAGA into the dustbin of hell.

  14. You know what? Good. Republicans don’t play fair, so neither should we. Honor means nothing when your opponent has none. It’s time to even the playing field.

  15. This redistricting arms race started by Republicans is totally a normal and healthy thing for a democracy. /s

In reality, all this feels like something that would come from the 1850s in the lead up to the civil war or reconstruction — not saying that it is going to happen but states haven’t been at each other’s throats like this in a while.

  16. Do it. It’s time to start fighting back. Blue states need to start showing their power vs empty red states that influence every inch of our policy making.

  17. full purge across the country, it a state runs blue, keep it blue.

  18. >We cannot unilaterally disarm

And there it is. Finally a fucking democrat understands the moment.

  19. This could backfire, but I also believe part of this play is to drain Republican coffers campaigning against this. Any kind of political campaign in California is very, very expensive to run.

Even if the Dems spend a lot less money losing this, I think it’s still a win if you’re a Democratic strategist.

  20. If you want to stop him, go ahead make gerrymandering illegal

  21. So it’s a special election to democratically choose to redistrict.

I wish it was a special election to fill those seats this November instead of waiting til the midterms. They’d be new seats that are unfilled. Fill them as soon as they’re created. We need help now.

  22. Fuck the GOP, two can play your stupid fucking games.

  23. NY needs to get its ass in gear and start the legal process to redraw the maps

I appreciate that he’s calling out the fact this is in response to Trump and the GOP setting this precedent and acknowledging that he wishes it did not come down to this, but Republicans have left Democrats no option but to fight fire with fire
