"Good evening (my name)

So I’m counting on you to be here for the 3 days you gave me, because when you’re absent it disrupts all the organization and your colleagues’ leave.

Thank you"

Context:
I’m a barista under a fixed-term student contract.

I caught a pretty tough laryngitis this week. In accordance with the contract and labor law, I provided a medical certificate from a general practitioner attesting to my inability to work for the entire week within two working days of my absence on Monday and alerted them before the start of my shift.

I’ve just received a message from the Manager, which I find completely pointless and unnecessarily threatening, considering that I was still stuck in bed with a 38°C fever and a pretty stubborn cough, which would obviously have alarmed customers, and that I am clearly within my rights from a legal standpoint.

  1. Ignore it. You are within your rights. It’s the managers job to deal with staffing issues due to absences not yours.

If I walked into a coffee shop, or any other place that serves food/drinks, and someone was coughing behind the counter I would never go back there.

  2. I’d even extend it , this is a good example how it isn’t done. You have rights , a manager job is to make sure the company is running , not pushing his sick employees to solve the problem for him.

  3. lol at your employer for the passive aggressive “donc”

Screw them for putting your sick leave on the same pedestal as your co-workers vacation and screw them for running a company in such a way that one sick employee disrupts the whole endeavour

They can’t do jack shit to you and they conveniently provided written proof of them pressuring you

  4. In short, fuck your employer, stay home and get better.

  5. Reply back ‘Donc, Je m’en fous. Je suis malade.’

The ‘Donc’ is such a D-move. Hope you get better soon!

Ga naar de dokter em vraag een week erbij.

  6. I saw you’re looking for other work and I just want to say please do. I dealt with a manager once who interrogated me on my sick leave when I literally ended up in hospital with 41 degrees fever and a bad case of a bacterial infection. Leaving that job was such a relief for me mentally on my days off as well.

You don’t owe a low-paid job the stress or guilt of being sick! It’s absurd! One person being ill doesn’t capsize a business, it just reveals bad management.

    Feel better soon OP.

  7. I’m pretty sure horeca is suffering personnel shortage. Hard to see why. /s

  8. Lol tell your boss to fuck off and take your place instead of sending messages. Sick = sick. End of discussion.

  9. “Nous pouvons contacter le médecin conseil de la mutuelle, et l’inspection du travail pour médiation si c’est nécessaire.”

See how quickly they back off

  10. Don’t reply, extend your sick leave if needs to be, walk in casually next week.
