  1. Seems she got some sort of a health scare, put her in the hospital, and pulling out.

Throws the race in the air a bit.

Hope she recovers well whatever it was.

  2. Sean Kelly has been spotted dancing a jig down whatever street the little pissing boy statue is on in Brussels.

  3. FG to co-opt someone else or sit it out? Was anyone considered before McGuiness?

  4. Maybe this is the race beginning to get interesting

  5. Since it’s a paywall, this is what she has said:
“This decision is not lightly taken and follows a stay in hospital last week.

“My priority now is my health. Given that the election is in a short couple of months, I do not believe that I have the strength to give the campaign my all.”.

  6. Really throws the cat amongst the pigeons in one way, in another way Sean Kelly will slot in fairly easily.

  7. On a human level, I wish her the best of health and hope she recovers quickly and fully.

On a political level, I’m delighted

  8. Or splits a relatively clear vote along several nutters

  9. Would be nice to have a Kerryman in the Aras(assuming Sean Kelly runs)

  10. Great that she pulled out of the race, as she was a terrible candidate.

  11. Somewhere in Europe, Sean Kelly is celebrating like he won the World Cup, just made the race a bit more of a free for all. But wishing her the best and its great she’s putting her health first!

  12. This does potentially open the door to Catherine Connolly becoming President without an election!

  13. Sean Kelly would probably be a stronger candidate tbf.. consistent performer in EU elections and has a established GAA/Gaeilgeoir background.

    Wish her the best.

  14. Gareth Sheridan boss call made. It’s time for the leader of our times to rise to the task.

  15. This actually is genuinely a shock but actually fair play to her for withdrawing, it is a 7 year term and long term health issues are a huge concern. Some politicians from everywhere would run regardless of health advice. The election dynamics have just changed for all parties now.

  16. Firstly, I hope Mairead McGuiness recovers from whatever illness she has.

Sean Kelly very likely to get the Fine Gael nod now.

Although he’s going to be viewed as a second rate candidate now, the spare or backup guy.

It does throw the election open for sure. The front runner gone is major.

This is a blessing for Fianna Fáil, as attention will be taken off their candidate selection.

I think Sean Kelly could get in on transfers, but even Mary Lou could shave it if the FFer comes in behind her.

  17. Oh no! Anyway.

Edit: Funny how this place gives out about FFG so much yet has so many defenders now in this thread.

  18. Right decision to take under the circumstances, it will also lessen the offence some took in FG when they weren’t even in the running before

  19. Im not going to respond because A. I won’t change anybody’s opinion and B. Im not trying to. I won’t vote for him though.

  20. Hope she’s ok but politically I’m happy …wasn’t her fan

  21. I hope she is ok now, but the cynic in me can’t help wondering if there was something about to break and she decided to get out first.

  22. Blows the door wide open for Sinn Fein and Fianna Fáil.

  23. It’s sad, hopefully she can recover. She was right to pull out. I wouldn’t have voted for her myself. I’m not impressed with any of them so far.

  24. We are literally going to end up with McGregor aren’t we

  25. Firstly my thoughts are with Mairead. I’m certain she must have had a serious development to have pulled out so soon after nomination.

With regards to the presidential race this is quite the development, I had it pegged as a two horse race between Connolly and McGuinness, I didn’t feel any other potential candidate even among the names touted would match their momentum, short of something unprecedented like a party leader like McDonald or Martin running themselves.

I’m not sure Fine Gael has anybody as safe as McGuinness to nominate now. If Fianna Fail was on the fence about running a candidate, their chances have improved drastically.

  26. I hope she will be ok.

I would have voted for her purely based on her performance when she had to very regularly deal with all the UKs Brexit morons on newsnight.

  27. Fine Gael candidate will win regardless of who it is , Fianna Fáil won’t stand anyone so FG/FF vote will be enough to bring home someone rich to look after the rich 💰💰💰

  28. All politics aside. Really wish he a speedy recovery

  29. I wish her well and hope that it’s nothing serious. Having said that, as someone who would not like to have seen her get the presidency, I’m glad to see the race opening up now

  30. Not the first time she pulled out. FG have a shit squad. They keep flogging McGuinness for Pres and she keeps dropping. Anyway she should look after herself first and foremost.

  31. I wonder if the whole Indian embassy warning thing will give fine gael the idea of running varadkar. Be a handy way to have Indian origin citizens vote for their candidate but damn I hate varadkar. Thinks landlordisms a full time job and homosexual men shouldn’t donate blood because their dirty despite being both a doctor and homosexual. Pretty sure there was a TV interview with his parents that disappeared since where they said their quite left wing and have no idea where he got his Tory notions heh. A vote for Leo would literally just be a vote for whichever company or European official that offers him the best job after don’t do it guys!!
