A Dispute Resolution Specialist, Wells was made partner of Dunedin law firm Gallaway Cook Allan late last year

New Zealand Cricket (NZC) have announced that selector Sam Wells has stepped down from his role in order to concentrate on his ‘work commitments’.

Wells was appointed selector in September 2023, and he oversaw a successful period for the BlackCaps in which they whitewashed India away from home in 2024, and reached the final of the Champions Trophy in 2025. However, he has stepped down from his role to fully concentrate on his law career.

A Dispute Resolution Specialist, Wells was made partner of Dunedin law firm Gallaway Cook Allan late last year.

“While I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my time in the role, I’ve made the difficult decision to step down in order to prioritise my personal and professional commitments outside of cricket,” Wells said.

“I remain a proud supporter of the BLACKCAPS and will continue to cheer the team on as they build toward future success.”

Reflecting further over the past couple of years, Wells said: “Serving as selection manager for the BLACKCAPS over the past two years has been a tremendous privilege.

“I’m deeply grateful to NZC for the opportunity to contribute to the national side.

“It’s been an honour to work alongside the dedicated coaches, talented players, and committed support staff around New Zealand.”

NZC confirmed that they will continue with the current selection model which has three selectors but provides the head coach with the ultimate selection authority.

“I think one of the unsung success stories for the BLACKCAPS over the past decade or so has been the selection model – and Sam has played his own part in that,” NZC chief executive Scott Weenink said.
