COP26: Germany fails to sign up to 2040 combustion engine phaseout

  1. That’s really bad, but it was foreseeable since Germany is forming a government right now. They’ve already outruled a phaseout bei 2030, but hopefully 2040 could be something they can agree on. Here is a list of other EU countries that haven’t signed either:

    Belgium

    Bulgaria

    Estonia

    France

    Greece

    Italy

    Latvia

    Malta

    Portugal

    Romania

    Slovakia

    Spain

    Czech Republic

    Hungary

  2. Looks around at Audi, Porsche, Volkswagen, BMW, Mercedes, etc all down the street… no shit they won’t push to phase out ICE by 2040, that’s like a huge portion of their economy right there.

Even if those manufacturers aren’t employing half of Germany, they’re still either contributing in taxes or boosting Germany’s reputation by proxy.

Sure, you could legislate against those companies but it will only create the same issue they have with tech companies and taxes – they’ll just relocate to places where they can still operate in the same way as they adapt at a slower rate.

These are the sort of issues that need global pacts from every government for the good of humanity, and that’s why the world as we know it is doomed due to capitalist greed.

  3. Won’t matter. I’m pretty sure that the legacy car market will collapse within a decade – long before 2040.

  4. China does not want to become climate neutral before 2060, India 2070.

Why should Germany destroy a significant part of its automotive industry decades earlier?

  5. Why should we? Combusting Hydrogen engines are still an option and might be far better than electric vehicles that get their electricity out of a socket, because of Lignite burning.
