During a speech at a gathering of the Moldovan diaspora, President Maia Sandu expressed concern about the unprecedented pressure from external forces on the diaspora ahead of the upcoming parliamentary elections.
“We know that hostile forces from abroad are exerting unprecedented pressure on the diaspora as well. We have information about attempts to bribe voters in the diaspora. We also observe a significant rise in activity of fake accounts within the Moldovan diaspora, which participate in a coordinated influence campaign on social networks, promoting anti-European slogans and messages aimed against reforms and policies that have been pursued in recent years, and also against Moldova”
– Maia Sandu
Threat Context and Public Response
According to the head of state, such actions could intensify in the coming weeks and influence the political attitudes of Moldovan communities abroad through the use of fake accounts and other information manipulations.
Sandu urged compatriots abroad to remain vigilant, to uphold unity and defend the sovereignty, democratic values, and the country’s European course, warning about manipulations that could affect the election results.
Presidential national security adviser Stanislav Sekrieru noted that Russia is intensifying its efforts to influence Moldovan citizens across Europe with the aim of interfering in the parliamentary elections scheduled for September 28, 2025.
“Russia is preparing for an unprecedented interference in the country’s parliamentary elections.”
– Stanislav Sekrieru
On July 30, 2025, Sandu again stressed the threat of foreign influence and urged citizens to unite to defend Moldova’s democratic choice and European course.
Such statements underscore the seriousness of the risks posed by foreign influence on democratic processes and emphasize the need for societal consolidation to safeguard the will of the people.
