Ireland may have some way to go when it comes to pet friendliness, as the vast majority of hotels do not accept dogs. But when they do, they can do it very well indeed.

The range of styles, amenities, house rules and prices (if any), varies tremendously. But what they all have in common is a real love of dogs. Time to hit the road with Fido, so!

1. The Kingsley, Cork

The Kingsley Hotel in Cork city. The Kingsley Hotel in Cork city.

Genuinely dog-friendly places to stay in cities are few and far between, but The Kingsley is one of them and, set right beside the Lee, blessed with riverside walking.

The Kingsley ‘Paws Policy’ explains restrictions — notably, only small to medium-sized fully house trained dogs are allowed, and must not be left unattended in bedrooms — and good things too.

Some dining areas are allowable, for example, and a doggy afternoon tea can be served in your bedroom.

2. Ballyvolane House, Fermoy, Co Cork

The Green family’s famously relaxed and hospitable East Cork country house is very dog-friendly and there is lots of space for them to run around outside in the beautiful gardens and woodland.

There are no additional charges or restrictions and dogs can stay in the guest rooms with their owners. Magic.

3. Seaview House Hotel, Ballylickey, Co Cork

A warm welcome and personal supervision are the hallmarks of Ronan O’Sullivan’s beautifully located country house hotel near Ballylickey Bridge and it is very dog-friendly, with large gardens and plenty of good walking nearby.

It’s a relaxing place to stay as, while not permitted in the public areas of the hotel, there are four ground-floor guest rooms with direct garden access, where dogs can stay with their owners.

4. Dunmore House Hotel Clonakilty, Co Cork

Beautifully located overlooking Clonakilty Bay, the O’Donovan and Barrett families have created a real home from home at this immaculately maintained hotel for their many fans — and their dogs.

There are no restrictions on the number or size of dogs and they are allowed in the dog friendly bedrooms — spacious ground floor rooms with balconies and views of the Atlantic, and anywhere in the hotel except Adrift restaurant. There is no extra cost.

5. Carbery Cottage Guest Lodge, Durrus, Co Cork

Qualified dog trainer Mike Hegarty and artist Julia Bird’s exceedingly hospitable and beautifully located 4-star B&B on Sheep’s Head Peninsula, is a one-off treat for dog lovers.

No restrictions or extra cost for dogs, 60m enclosed agility arena for supervised doggy exercise — plus superb food and great value are among the many reasons for staying.

Short on rules and long on welcome, this place is a real gem. If proof were needed that there’s a niche market for dog-friendly stays, this is it.

6. Barnahown B&B Mitchelstown, Co Cork

Barnahown B&BBarnahown B&B

“The polished concrete floors and simple furnishings mean Barnahown is good for hikers and dogs alike,” says owner Ciara O’Brien, of her delightful sustainably converted ‘Low impact luxury’ farmhouse near the Galtee mountains.

All dogs other than restricted breeds are permitted, in bedrooms — two per room — and throughout the property, and there is no additional charge.

”I generally find people who travel with dogs to be the tidiest guests,” she adds.

7. Pax House Dingle, Co Kerry

John O’Farrell’s luxurious B&B takes full advantage of its stunning location overlooking Dingle Bay and, although just a few minutes walk into the town, it feels like another world.

“Small[ish], well-behaved dogs are just as welcome at Pax House as their owners,” he says, and one of the magnificent terrace sea view bedrooms is dog friendly, with direct access to the lawn.

Book by phone or email, not online.

10. Gregans Castle Hotel, Ballyvaughan, Co Clare

The Haden family’s famous dining destination may not be an obvious choice when travelling with your dog, but they’re big animal lovers, and of course The Burren and nearby beaches are perfect for those long walks.
