RENO, Nev. (KOLO) – The University of Nevada Reno is empowering its teachers to embrace AI technology
Pack AI is the name of the program at the University of Nevada Reno. It is designed to help students learn how to use AI to help them learn. They said that AI can tutor students generate flashcards and generate practice test questions.
Starting this semester new students are required to complete online courses about AI technology focusing on ethics.
“Every student on our campus will be exposed to AI and, most importantly, how to use it ethically, you know, and how to use it the right way. I was terrified of it, and I think one of the things is, when you don’t know about it, you’re afraid of it,” says UNR President Brian Sandoval.
Pack AI will also help teachers in the classroom by generating discussion questions, creating a multitude of different assessment questions, and helping to design course assignments.
“We have a faculty member who’s training other faculty members. We’re going to have a speaker series with faculty from all of our colleges to train, you know, their fellow faculty members and give lectures on artificial intelligence,” says Sandoval.
Sandoval says he fully embraces this new technology because it’s the future for job markets and learning and the next wave technological advances.
“The reality is, it is used now, you know, with companies and the workforce and what have you, and we already have it in the classroom. And the important thing is to make sure that it is used the right way. We don’t want to substitute it for, you know, doing the hard work,” says Sandoval.
Sandoval also says that UNR isn’t the first university to implement a program like this The Ohio State is another college that has incorporated ai into their curriculum.
Sandoval says that even though they are integrating Ai into their curriculum, those that use the platforms incorrectly will not be tolerated.
And that’s the whole point of Pack AI saying it’s designed to make very clear what is and is not appropriate.
