Are Conservative candidates in the local elections ashamed of their party?

    >In 53 out of 69 wards, candidates have opted to go for the Local Conservatives brand, not The Conservative Party. Cllr Alden recently fought a by-election in Birmingham Erdington and, when asked at the time if he would be inviting Boris to join him on campaign, he would not be drawn on it. …

  2. If they were, they would be running as independents. If they are happy to still run as a Conservative after the last weekend, then they are neither ashamed of Johnson’s ‘apologies’ nor Patel’s immigration plans at least. They are also not ashamed of austerity, the Grenfell Tower inquiry, Brexit, the COVID response or the asylum process for Ukrainians.

  3. Category error. Conservative candidates self-evidently cannot have any shame or they wouldn’t have joined the party to begin with.

  4. No: they would need to have the capacity for shame, and anyone still in Johnson’s party is, by definition, lacking it.

They’re just taking people for mugs. It’s all they ever do, and after the last decade, you can’t really blame them for not thinking much of the British electorate. They’re clearly fucking morons.

  5. The PMQs was a grand display of Tory soggy biscuit at its finest. They’re shamelessly all still queuing up to rim Johnson at any and every turn, regardless of what nonsense tumbles out of his mouth.

  6. You can always tell if a candidate or MSP is a Tory if they never mention what party they are from in Scotland.

  7. Considering that the BBC couldn’t get a single tory councillor to join in their debates on Welsh local elections a couple of days ago I would say yes.

  8. After the local Conservative candidate kept saying ‘I want to focus on local issues’, I asked her why she chose to ally with the national Conservative party, rather than another party or running as an independent. No response.

  9. > . . . the leaflet gives the impression that it is promoting an independent candidate, yet Foster has been a member of the Conservative Party for 15 years and was Conservative leader of Craven district council for five years

    He’s a Craven conservative?

  10. They’re not. I came across people out posting flyers yesterday, and they did ask me I they could count on my vote. I genuinely asked them why they though I would vote for a party that condones lying, corruption and criminal behaviour and a utterly incompetent PM.

Their response was exactly what I was expecting. Firstly Boris is doing an excellent job under extreme circumstances, and that they were fighting the local elections on local issues. I pointed out a lot of the local issues were caused by national government policies set out by the Conservative party. They replied that I was naive and should look deeper at the problems the LibDem lead council was causing and that they were nothing to do with government.

Are they ashamed? No, they just lie, obfuscate, and delay much like the national government.

  11. Nearly all the leaflets we get through the door from Conservative candidates are lacking any mention of the party they represent.
I’d say they are definitely avoiding mentioning who they represent. They’ll even have colours that are completely different from the usual blue colours so they look like they are nothing to do with the Tories.

  12. Not really, at least the ones canvassing my areas certainly arent. When i ask why i should vote for a party led by a compulsive liar who cant even say how many kids he has, they just start their spiel of “under the labour government” bollocks.

Its like talking to a broken record

  13. Considering my local Tory MP tried his best to make a move on the PM set during partygate and sides with every bad decision going, all while being a massive hypocrite, id say no, no they are not
