Merkel pressures Putin to act on Poland-Belarus standoff

  1. Merkel pressures Putin ?? Great joke, You make my day… Before she was just conserned about …

  2. Why don’t they just let them in and then quickly deport them? I don’t understand what the issue is about. Nobody would come if they knew they’d just be swiftly deported.

  3. Isn’t this all Putins doing to begin with? Lukashenko is his lapdog, I am sure he wouldn’t be doing this if Putin didn’t already sanction or suggest it.

  4. She’s literally talking to the guy who orchestrated the whole thing, asking him to act. What a joke. She can’t be that clueless, so I’m guessing it’s just business as usual. Russia fucks some shit up in the neighborhood, everyone is deeply concerned and calls for dialogue, Russia finally “agrees” to “stabilize the situation” (which they created to begin with), and boom, another foothold secured. Georgia, Ukraine, Belarus, one slice at a time. But at least order is restored.

It’s in Poland’s and the Baltic countries’ vital interest that Putin *does not* act at all regarding this situation.

  5. European leaders have no ability to defend themselves against such an “attack”, be it carried out by Turkey, Belarus or any other bordering country, if the EU does not first reach a consensus on who is a refugee, and what are his/her rights. And then it moves to a discourse and a policy consistent with that consensus. Meanwhile, Erdoğan, Lukashenko or Mohammed VI can easily afford to extort the EU.

Seen from the outside, the situation is hilarious; EU countries accusing a third country because it forces them to comply with legislation that the EU itself compels. Legislation that the third country may not have to enforce, and which it in no way imposes on the EU.

The figure of the political refugee was invented, and used, in the context of the Cold War; basically someone fleeing the communist bloc. In this context, such a figure was easily accepted by European societies, both because of the number of possible refugees and because of the worldview of such refugees. However, this figure of European law has turned against European societies, but the legislation, the judicial nomenclature, and part of the population have not yet adapted to the new reality.

  6. Lmao this is Putins doing. Lukashenko is too busy eating and drinking to come up with this !

Eu needs to hold an emergency meeting and push back ! Send in Frontex and tell Poland to stop being such a little whinny bitch and take the help.

  7. The immigrants arrive to Belarus from Turkey, so Erdogan is cooperating with Lukashenko on this, but does Putin play a role?

  8. Pretty hard to pressure Putin, when yoi have a gas pipe which should take you through winter. What will Merkel say to Putin? We wont buy your gas?

  9. Wtf is wrong with the quality of comments in this sub ? I swear every time I think it can’t get worst, it somewhat still does.

  10. Which international law is Lavrov referring to here? Because neither of these countries have ratified the general consensus nor does Russias stance on international law include **individuals** in the very definition. Russia also heavily opposes unilateral military interventions, intervention in the affairs of other states and unilateral sanctions (go figure).

This means that if Russia sends military support for Lukashenko they breach their own definition of what constitutes international law.

But throwing liability to countries with a broader humanitarian perception of international law (if not EU legislation) is such a convenient thing to do when you’re not abiding them yourself.

Poland have no obligation to do anything unless these migrants end up on their soil, hence, the militarised border protection.
