The crude oil leak from a train that derailed in Dodge County on Aug. 15 has been contained, officials said.
The leak began after about 22 trains cars derailed from a train operated by CKPC, the company formerly known as Canadian Pacific Railroad, between Maiden Lane Road and the village of Reeseville in the town of Lowell.
In an Aug. 16 news release, the Dodge County Sheriff’s Office said CKPC officials confirmed that all leaking rail cars had been contained.
“The cars that were breached have been plugged,” the news release said. “Multiple resources have been deployed, and the main effort right now is to get the main line back open.”
Officials have yet to determine a cause of the derailment. No one was injured in the incident.
The derailment took place shortly after 2 p.m., causing the track to close to passenger traffic. The track also carries Amtrak trains carrying passengers between Milwaukee and Minneapolis.
The sheriff’s office has no timeline for the track reopening.
Authorities asked the public to avoid the village of Reeseville, Danville Road, Caine Warehouseing and Maiden Lane Road, as they expect heavy traffic through the weekend.
During an Aug. 15 news conference, Clyman-Lowell-Reeseville Fire Chief Eric Howlett said the derailed train cars were leaking about 1 gallon of crude oil a minute.
A day later and with the leaks plugged, CKPC teams did not find any hazards in overnight air quality monitoring, the news release said.
CKPC will continue air monitoring and has “environmental and hazardous material teams” on site to continue investigating the derailment, the sheriff’s office said.
The Aug. 15 crash is the second train derailment that has occurred in recent years in Dodge County. In July 2023, a then-Canadian Pacific train derailed in the Town of Lowell.
Since 2022, there have been 48 train derailments in Wisconsin, according to Federal Railroad Administration data between 2022 and May 31, 2025. There have been two derailments between January and May 31, according to the data.
