Met Police: Problems not just a ‘few bad apples’, says chief

  1. The saying literally originated from “A bad apple quickly infects it’s neighbour”, always thought it was weird how “Just one bad apple” is used today as a way of deflecting from solving the bad apple problem vs solving it before it gets worse.

  2. No shit. There seems to be a new scandal every week and another officer is shown to be racist, a thug or a sex offender. At some point, you have to admit that there are flaws in the vetting process or safeguarding process as a significant minority of officers are not up to scratch and should not be in such a position of power.

  3. Honestly good to hear. From this article he sounds exactly the sort of person running things that we need in this situation.

Its a shame he’s only acting commissioner. I wouldn’t mind if he officially takes over the post. Having someone like him in charge might actually make headway to solve these problems. The first step to solving any problem is admitting they exist, and its nice to hear an official who’s honest about them for once rather than more deflection.

  4. i hate the phrase “just a few bad apples.” finish the goddamn saying. “a few bad apples spoils the bunch.” throw the lot out.

  5. “We need to recruit just over 4,000 officers in the next 12 months”

I think that might be a lot of the problem. There may not be 4,000 people in London who both want to join the police and are suitable candidates for the job.

Maybe think about how to reduce the amount of work police do and handle some things (e.g. mental health, drugs) differently.

  6. Correct. They’re corrupt to the core the whole length and breadth of that police force. You can trace it way back to the 60s.
