Commonwealth LNG has asked for federal permission to start site work at its proposed location in Southwest Louisiana.
The company sent its request to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) on Aug. 13, noting that recent legal challenges against the project have been cleared and the company is ready to begin initial site preparation for the facility.
As proposed, Commonwealth LNG is a 9.5 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) export terminal on the west bank of the Calcasieu Ship Channel. The company plans to make a final investment decision on the facility before October.
Commonwealth LNG was one of several proposed LNG facilities made to file supplementary environmental statements in 2024, following a ruling by the Court of Appeals, D.C. Circuit. The FERC complied with the court’s order in June, clearing the way for further development of the project.
Commonwealth LNG is a portfolio company of Kimmeridge Energy Management, an alternative-asset manager. Abu Dhabi-owned Mubadala Energy acquired a 24.1% stake in Kimmeridge’s Eagle Ford Shale E&P Kimmeridge Texas Gas (KTG) and Commonwealth LNG on Aug. 7.
