Russian tennis players barred from competing at Wimbledon

  1. ITT : People who have little to no understanding of geopolitics.

You may not agree with the Russian people being the biggest victims of the sactions, but I suspect you agree with that more than nuclear missiles flying every which way…

  2. At the end of the day international sporting is and always will be a geopolitical tool to foster good relations between competing nations, and the nation of origin of the competitors very much factors into that.

Anyone who doesn’t like it can get fucked.

  3. We should treat Russia like we did South Africa. I am sure many white south Africans enjoyed the benefits of segregation or positive discrimination towards them but the sporting isolation is something none of them enjoyed

  4. I see this as a geopolitical move and not as a moral or ethical move. If banning Russian atheletes helps to bring peace to Ukraine, then very well. If not, its another arrow wasted.

  5. That’s a bit odd, they compete as individuals and not for their nations, and at least two Russian players I can think of were public in their disapproval of the invasion.

  6. Ridiculous. Imagine punishing athletes because you don’t agree with their countries actions which they have absolutely nothing to do with.

  7. Don’t think we should be alienating the Russian population and adding to the “us vs them” sentiment. We should be creating a “us vs Putin” sentiment instead.

  8. What does this actually achieve, in terms of stopping the war? Are the Russian tennis players going to convince Putin to stop the war? Or will this just deepen and increase prevalence of the Russian public’s sense of antagonistic national pride?
