Italy, Spain, Greece, France… Wildfires break out across Southern Europe • FRANCE 24 English

An hour’s drive south of Pamplona, Spanish firefighters use helicopters to try and douse a wildfire raging out of control. Their payloads though a pittance compared to the towering flames. Further west, distraught residents of Kusedo watched as fire invaded their town. Soon the helicopters are going to leave. The trucks will run out of water and the entire town will be burnt. We’ve been left with nothing. In Italy, army engineers took a fire break on Mount Vuvius. The dormant volcano that once covered Pompei in fire and ash is now itself ablaze. Hundreds of hectares up in smoke at one of the country’s most popular national parks, including valuable vineyards. Meanwhile, another dormant volcano is also burning. This one in the seemingly unlikely location of Edinburghough, Scotland, where the iconic Arthur’s Seat that overlooks the historic city caught fire Sunday amid what is so far the country’s driest year since 1964. Europe is in the midst of yet another highly destructive wildfire season. As rising temperatures and increasing drought brought on by climate change continue to boost the intensity and frequency of the disasters in France, the country’s worst fire in decades is now under control in the southern department of UD. Evacuated residents returning home, though authorities warned that the fire could reignite, saying it will be weeks before it’s fully extinguished. Meanwhile, a new powerful heat wave is set to grip France this week with temperatures forecast to top 40 degrees C in several areas of the country on Tuesday.

Europe is facing another summer of wildfires, as the effects of man-made climate change continue to intensify on the continent. Fires are currently burning in Italy, Spain, and even Scotland – major blazes in France and Greece are now contained but authorities worry they could re-ignite. Story by Bryan Quinn.
