Twillingate RCMP Investigating Fire Near Little Harbour

Twillingate RCMP say a fire at an abandoned school earlier this week is considered suspicious in nature.

The incident happened in the early-morning hours of Thursday near Little Harbour along Route 340.

The fire destroyed the former school and spread into the woods before crews could extinguish the fire.

It’s one of a number of suspicious fires in the region in recent weeks. The green lodge in Hillgrade burned down earlier this month, forcing the temporary closure of the Road to the Isles, and the Twillingate Volunteer Fire Department was recently kept on the hop with two fires in one night. One which caused extensive damage to the Salvation Army church building in Bayview which was vacant and up for sale, and the other at the Esso in Twillingate.

Aside from any potential criminal charges, the provincial government has substantially increased the fines associated with illegal fires to a minimum of $50,000.

Police are asking anyone who may have information, including dash cam footage, to contact the RCMP or Crime Stoppers.
