A teen went headfirst into a well to save a child

In April 2013, the quiet town of Segarcea in Dolj County, Romania, witnessed a gripping rescue after a 3-year-old named Gabriel fell about 15m into a narrow well, resisting 11 hours of professional efforts to free him. As the operation stretched on and options dwindled, 14-year-old Cristian Marian Becheanu volunteered to be lowered headfirst into the cramped shaft, barely wide enough for his frame, so he could reach the child and bring him to safety. Strapped to ropes and guided by rescuers, Cristian emerged moments later holding Gabriel, a scene captured on video and later shared widely.

Cristian’s courage earned him the nickname “Hero of Segarcea,” national recognition, and local awards and support, including assistance toward his dream of becoming a firefighter. In interviews and posts recalling the event, he framed his act with humility: he simply did what needed to be done, yet his split-second bravery continues to resonate as a defining example of selfless action under pressure.
