Four reactors of power plant invaded by animals • FRANCE 24 English

Small and seemingly harmless, yet capable of bringing one of Europe’s biggest pieces of infrastructure to its knees. A swarm of jellyfish has forced the largest nuclear plant in Western Europe, France’s Grave Lines facility, to a halt. So, how did this happen? Well, a bloom of jellyfish drifted towards the plant, clogging the seawater intake gates that are used to cool the reactors. And without that cooling, the system automatically shut down. So the massive arrival of these jellyfish is generally linked to the currents that sweep the entire group towards the coast and they tend to concentrate there. France’s electricity giant EDF says the safety systems worked exactly as they should, even if the trigger was bizarre to say the least, adding these shutdowns had no impact on the safety of the facilities, staff or environment, and the invasion won’t disrupt electricity supply. There will be few consequences because historically France has very low consumption in the summer. Moreover, this is when we carried maintenance on. This isn’t the first time jellyfish have staged an unplanned takeover. Grave lines saw a similar shutdown 30 years ago. In 2013, a Swedish plant was forced to close for 3 days and an Israel facility experienced something similar in 2011. The temperatures of the oceans and rivers will continue to rise. This means that there will probably be more frequent problems with jellyfish. EDF says inspections are underway with full operations expected Thursday.

A French nuclear plant temporarily shut down on Monday due to a “massive and unpredictable presence of jellyfish” in its filters, its operator said. The swarm clogged up the cooling system and caused four units at the Gravelines nuclear power plant to automatically switch off, energy group EDF said. France24 C. Lam and France2 A. Guin and N. Poitevin report.

  1. Did a Russian tanker ship release millions of jellyfish from its storage tanks near the nuclear plant cooling system?

  2. That's such a primitive task, probably for 2nd/3rd year student, to solve this easy technical issue and yet this happens again and again 😮 They can crack atoms but they can't filter out fish from water 😅 disgrace

  3. I always thought the French are against the environment, but now the invite jellyfish to their powerplants, LOL
