Italy’s Mount Vesuvius closed to tourists as wildfire rages • FRANCE 24 English

Some people looking at Mount Vuvius initially thought the worst had happened that there had been a volcanic eruption. Help! Vuvius is erupting. The valley is destroyed. Panic spread among motorists around Vuvius. Local residents were stunned. I was on my sofa on the balcony to look at the stars and look at what was new this evening. Just look at it. It was not a volcanic eruption, but a huge fire. Smoke and flames have been billowing day and night since Friday. The wind is strong. Temperatures are high. Nearby residents are anxious. I’m old. I’m 80 years old. I could barely breathe. We were terrified. We couldn’t sleep. We were afraid of the fire. A thick plume of smoke can be observed from the sky. On the ground, hiking trails are closed, inaccessible to visitors. It really smelled like something was burning. It was something quite impressive because the sky was completely purple and there was ash on the car. With Vuvius just nearby, it has been a lot taken. Local authorities say around 500 hectares have been burnt. An investigation is now underway into what caused the fire.

This Sunday has been devastating for countries in southern Europe facing violent fires. Massive resources – including firefighters and the army – were deployed in southern Italy to battle a blaze on the flanks of Mount Vesuvius near Naples. Story by France 2 and Nicholas Rushworth.
