American conservatism has really shifted to an ideology without principles or beliefs. It’s main point of conservatism is in its opposition. Anti-lib, anti-deep state, anti intellectual, anti globalism. What is considered lib, or deep state, or globalist changes depending on what is expedient. The only constant is that there will be groups and institutions they scapegoat. It’s a really a mass movement of disgruntled Americans that are angry, but need to be told what to be angry at.
Somehow, MAGA has convinced itself that Ukraine is some kind of liberal loving, globalist promoting hegemon that needs to be opposed, and that towing the line of Russia is preferable to that. In fact, they see opposition to Ukraine as opposition to the “big man”. In the same way they see opposition to universities or diversity inclusion efforts.
What you’re watching are the seeds of authoritarianism being planted in America. This checks off all the boxes for the genesis of populist, authoritarian mass movements.
This is horrible for Ukraine. It’s a huge threat to their survival as a nation. But this is terrible for the US. The key elements of the US identity (as a nation) are completely wrecked. We are watching the collapse of an empire.
