EUREKA (25News Now) – The world’s largest disc golf tournament by participation finished another year in Eureka Lake Park on Sunday, injecting millions of dollars into the local economy.
The 15th Disc Golf Pro Tour Discraft Ledgestone Open drew thousands of players and fans all weekend.
Director of Operations, Michael Munn, said the event and the sport are growing every year. He said 2,400 players from 46 states and eight countries attended the event to compete in the Disc Gold Pro Tour Elite Series.
The tournament crowned several disc golf champions on Sunday.
“It couldn’t be possible without all the staff, as well as hundreds of volunteers showing up from St. Jude, Easterseals, and all the other organizations that are participating,” Munn said.
He said the organization keeps returning to Central Illinois to host the tournament because of what he calls a great location for the sport.
“All the facilities, the organizing bodies of the different cities, have been very welcoming to disc golf,” Munn said. “That has allowed us to build infrastructure here to host this event with this many people.”
Munn said he and other event leaders predict disc golf will bring in $3 million to the Central Illinois economy this year alone, and that there are more than 100,000 active members in the Professional Disc Golf Association.
