The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result.
In this instance of Lough Neagh, nothing has changed to prevent this so the outcome will remain the same.

This is environmental vandalism pure and simple. We need a proper strategy here not just the agricultural lobby getting everything they want. Part of the issue is that there are so many industrial meat farms that make so much shite there is no where to put it.
There needs to be investment in secondary processes to make fertiliser which we can export instead of dumping into rivers and streams.
Annoys me big time seeing this. Disgraceful that any part of the environment can be allowed to decline into such a state.
Snake, snaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaake
Ack bai, but we got that third and fourth dose of slurry in this summer, hae 🥳
The fuckers that cause it should be made to drink it. But they’ll keep the brown envelopes rolling to their mates in Stormont & all will be forgiven.
It’s bad now but when it starts to break down and decompose it is absolutely stinking
I look at Westminster sometimes and think the answer is to have fewer rich idiots and more people from working backgrounds in government. Then I look at this place and think….nope, that doesn’t work either.
Alot of human waste in there
This would be tolerable for the next 10 years if the project to prevent it ever happening from year 11 onwards was up and running.
At this stage I think actual protesters blocking fertilizer and animal feed stores is required. To wake up the farming community and local govt to the need to have the solution to this ecological crime in track and moving.
1.7 million cattle. 2 million sheep. 700k pigs. 24 million birds. All on 1 million hectares of farmland. With an associated DELUGE of nutrients, imported from mines across the globe and from artificial sources as well as organic. Very little is captured or treated, almost all of it enters the nutrient cycle.
But it’s those damn leaking septic tanks !!
Farming is big business in this country, with a powerful lobby and a powerful social backing. The Lough is doomed to remain like this until we look the problem in the face. And this is just a small fraction of what damage we’re causing, it just so happens that this one is quite visible.
I like how the snake eel things add to the toxicity vibe
This appeared in the river Lagan last week which goes to show it’s the sewage from water treatment plants causing it to
Well when ya leave those pesky pratestants incharge of something this is the result. Sort of /s but not really, the NI govt in the 70s had a chance to clean this and were in possession of the facts.
That is getting pretty bad, the smell must be getting up there too.
The main factor into this is the heat, I grew up in Florida. Almost every summer algae blooms happen in the canals as it’s brackish water (mix of salt and fresh water)
The heat makes it all the worse and yes run off plans a role, but it’s the heat that causes it begin to decompose and eventually smell horrific.
Blue green algae isn’t inherently dangerous, though when it thrives in abundant amounts it has the potential to create toxins.
A lot of the rivers look stagnant and polluted aswell the land is sick and so is society not goin to end well if it all keeps up
Is there no way Tourism NI could market this as a nutrient bath?
Can’t believe Stormont voted recently to do nothing about this, it’s verging on a full blown environmental disaster already, and will only get worse!
Who cares whos to blame at this stage, get it cleaned up and move on.
Hit the low hanging fruit for everyone
Line the rivers with trees and hedges to intercept the run off from slurry
Give finding to farmers to install Reed beds or what ever is needed to intercept nitrogen
NIW drain septic tanks and help maintain them in rural areas, give NIW to make what ever is needed in the plants to help stop the run off
Just get it built and adapt and.move on ffs
I wonder it theres some fast growing nitrogen heavy (preferable native) plant which we can put into the lough to try and abstract the nitrogen from the water
Im the Earl of Shaftesbury, who owns the bed and soil of Lough Neagh am happy to see the bloom back, as I said before I am willing to sell the lough. ( which is not yours is it, you bed and soil thief) for the right price. I remain open to what’s best outcome for the Lough. I will not gift it to anyone.
I’m well aware some people think that way but I’d like to be TREATED as any business owner and the business has a value, he said. The Earl does not think the latest environmental crisis is his responsibility.
The issues are to do with the water, and our ownership is the bed and soil, so the current situation is not our responsibility.
What the hell am I reading what this Earl is saying. The mindset of a 17th-century English cunt. These Earls have too much land. , time to take it back. Take it all back. Let the Lough Neagh revolution begin on September 1st, 2025.
Also, what do people think when they hear that Earls still own land in Northern Ireland? All part of the crown we don’t hear too much about because we are little folk. Unionist or nationalist or other or Jedi, it just does not sit well with me.

I hate all this finger pointing and blaming
