UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer announced on Sunday that he will join the meeting between Donald Trump and Ukraine’s leader in Washington on Monday. He will stand alongside his French, German, Italian and Finnish counterparts, as well as European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Nato Secretary General Mark Rutte.
The fallout of that summit and Trump’s own agenda to position himself as a peace-maker, with the perception of holding less regard for the details of any such deal, has prompted alarm among Ukraine and its allies.
“The biggest worry is that Trump accepts Putin’s agenda and puts everything on Ukraine to solve, [such as] Ukraine has to give up territory and accept these terms so that there can be a peace deal,” Dr Neil Melvin, director of international security at London’s Royal United Services Institute (Rusi), told *The i Paper*.
He said the Europeans are worried Ukraine will be forced to accept a “humiliating agenda that would essentially lead to the end of Ukraine” because Trump wants a deal even if it “it’s not going to produce a sustainable peace, because Russia hasn’t changed any of its goals, and its goals are for the elimination of Ukraine”.
