Hugh Grosvenor, Prince George’s godfather, is reportedly weighing up whether to ask Prince Harry or William to be his newborn daughter‘s godfather.

The Duke of Westminster and his wife, Olivia, welcomed their daughter Cosima on July 27, a joyous occasion that likely thrilled both Prince William, 44, and Harry, 40, who are among Hugh’s closest friends. However, it appears the birth has also created a major dilemma for Hugh. The matter concerns who will serve as Cosima’s godfather.

According to The Times, Hugh and Olivia find themselves treading through a “minefield” over whether to extend the honor to Harry or William.

Sources close to the couple indicate that William has been chosen, although this has not been officially confirmed, given his continued presence in Hugh’s life.

William previously asked Hugh to be the godfather to his eldest son, Prince George, now 12. However, Hugh, who possesses an estimated fortune of $12 billion, is also the godfather to Harry’s six year old son, Prince Archie.

This bond could potentially influence him towards offering Harry the same role for his daughter Cosima.

Hugh and Olivia have yet to officially reveal who the godparents of their daughter will be or when the christening will take place.

This isn’t the first time William and Harry’s rift has impacted Hugh’s family situations. Last year, William served as an usher at the duke’s wedding and Harry did not attend.

There are many rumors speculating the reason behind his absence, including a few that point to his explosive fallout with his older brother following the publication of his memoir Spare that had been released the year prior.

While the couple never shed light on the actual reasoning, their thoughts on Harry and his wife Meghan Markle‘s lack of attendance were revealed by a friend of the brothers.

While speaking to The Times at the time, they said, “It’s incredibly sad it has come to this. Hugh is one of very few close friends of William and Harry’s who has maintained strong bonds and a line of communication with both. He wishes they could put their heads together and patch things up, but realises it’s unlikely to happen before the wedding.”

The duke has been friends with Harry and William since childhood.

The Grosvenor family has long-standing relationship to the Royal family. Hugh played a key role in King Charles III‘s Coronation in 2023, carrying the Standards of the Quarterings of the Royal Arms and Standard of the Principality.

Hugh’s late father, Gerald Grosvenor, was a close friend of King Charles, who also became one of Hugh’s godparents following his birth in 1990.

Additionally, Gerald’s widow, Natalia, serves as a godmother to Prince William, and in a reciprocal gesture, the late Princess Diana was selected as a godmother to Gerald’s second daughter, Lady Edwina Grosvenor.
