TU Austria – the association of Austria’s three technical universities (TU Vienna, TU Graz, and Montanuniversität Leoben) – has launched a groundbreaking cooperation model with India. The courses are offered at reasonable fees.
Innovative study programs and PhD programs are planned that will make it possible to bring the best minds from India to Austria, where they can acquire expertise in cutting-edge technology and technology transfer, particularly in the areas of industrial modernization (plant engineering, automation), automotive/mobility, transport infrastructure (rail, cable cars, tunnel construction, traffic management), and the e-economy.
“We are proud to be part of this pioneering initiative that welcomes outstanding students from India to Austria. This program reflects our strong commitment to academic excellence, international exchange, and global responsibility. It opens doors to cutting-edge master’s programs in specialized fields such as circular engineering, resource efficiency, and sustainable technologies—disciplines that are crucial for shaping a more resilient and sustainable future. At our universities, we believe that diversity is a driver of innovation. By bringing together students from different cultures and academic backgrounds, we create an environment where bold ideas can nourish and practical solutions can emerge,” explains TU Austria President Peter Moser .
The Austrian industry will also be actively involved in this unique cooperation project. The goal is to facilitate access to the Austrian labor market for Indian students after graduation. This not only strategically addresses the shortage of skilled workers in technical professions but also creates a sustainable connection between science and industry.
The students upon completion of the course will be eligible for employment in Austria. Sources told ET that Indian professionals from these Austrian institutes will be eligible for employment in Central European states.
“This is a groundbreaking future cooperation that is not only about further deepening the existing partnership between Austria and India in science and research. Above all, it is about jointly breaking new ground in the areas of excellent teaching, innovative research, technology transfer and sustainability, in which both sides contribute their respective strengths,” emphasizes Elmar Pichl , Head of the Higher Education Section at the BMFWF.
Indian Ambassador to Austria Shambhu S. Kumaran also highlighted the benefits for Indian students: “We welcome the initiative of Austria’s leading technical universities to deepen educational cooperation with India by creating a special portal for Indian students. This portal will enable them to pursue engineering and technology-related degree programs in Austria. This significant step strengthens the ties between our countries and lays the foundation for a more intensive bilateral economic partnership in the future.”
