I have visited all of them but not the Åland islands yet. Cruise boats I've been on have stopped at their port but it doesn't count.

Which are your favourite and least favourite regions?

My faves: Lapland, Northern Savonia, Northern Ostrobothnia (Koillismaa to be exact: Kuusamo, Taivalkoski and Pudasjärvi). I also really liked Porvoo, Rauma and Hanko but I wouldn't say the regions they're in are my favs.

Least favs: Southern and Central Osthrobotnia (It's just sooo flat) and Kainuu.

  1. How come Kuusamo is your favorite and Kainuu least favorite, they are about the same compared to all regions.

  2. Yes. I was into motor racing and it took me everywhere. Central Finland is my home province and it’s a short drive to everywhere.

  3. I recall sleeping for at least one night in every region, except the Åland Islands. Which would now be the closest region to visit for me.
Would move to Lapland, if given free choice and 100% remote work.

  4. i live boring existence, I’ve never really left northern savonia, once i visited lapland and as a kid quick linnanmäki visit in helsinki

  5. We used to do lots of road trips when I was a kid, so I’ve visited a fair amount! Lappi is still a big dream though, furthest north I’ve been was in Oulu… Also missing Åland. Probably also missing some of the eastern regions.

  6. I mean I’ve visited some cities in many and at least driven through most but not sure of I’ve ever been in Kainuu or Satakunta. Also Etelä-Pohjanmaa is a question.

  7. Same here. Everywhere except Åland Islands (excluding port of Mariehamn by ferry).

  8. 2 years in Finland and I’ve been only to 4 regions 😂 …north Karelia is the best

  9. The only regions I haven’t visited are Kainuu and Åland. Päijät-Häme, Kanta-Häme and Lapland are borderline cases since I was driving through and only stopped in those regions to eat something. Central Ostrobothnia is also a somewhat similar story since my sister lives there so I dropped her off and returned home almost immediately.

But I’ve visited all the other regions on purpose. If I have to choose my favourite region, it’s probably Northern Karelia since Koli has some of the best scenery in all of Finland. I also like Central Finland since I’ve been living here for almost my whole life. Northern Ostrobothnia, specifically the area around Kalajoki, has a special place in my heart as well since I was born there and I spent many summers visiting my grandparents when they were still alive.

  10. Only been to 6 regions. Never really had the opportunity to visit other places here

  11. Nope. Been to Uusimaa, Kanta-Häme, Päijät-häme, Varsinais-Suomi, Pirkanmaa, Etelä-Savo, Pohjois-Savo, Kainuu, Pohjois-pohjanmaa and Lappi. Most of eastern Finland has just been a drive through on the way to Kemijärvi.

Edit: I’ve been to Keskisuomi too.

  12. Spend nights in every single one except Åland. Maybe one day. Kinda like the most living in Lapland, except late summer/early autumn. Usually live ~6-9 months of the year there, then the rest at “home” in Uusimaa.

  13. I was in upper pirkanmaa in the Ruovesi area, it was very nice

  14. Yes, I have visited all of them. I have also lived in six of them. I don’t have a favourite.

  15. If ‘visit’ consists of having spent a night in the region, I’ve been to Northern Ostrobothnia, Lapland, Kainuu, Pirkanmaa and Uusimaa.

Kainuu is my favorite. It is the homeland of my family, and despite all its flaws, I hold it dear; it is home. Northern Ostrobothnia is a close second, and while I live here, I don’t feel such a powerful connection.

For the rest, they were really just spending the night in Rovaniemi, Tampere and Espoo/Helsinki. I can’t say much about those, but I liked Tampere the most.

  16. I’ve never been to Pohjanmaa, Keski-Pohjanmaa and Åland. I only went to Lapland because of an army deployment.

  17. I visited everything.

Joensuu surroundings are amazing. Koli always calls back.

Tampere and its surroundings are good for life and good scenery as well.

    Was surprised by Kemijärvi beauty.

    Inari was amazing in winter.

  18. How would you define a visit? Driving thru or you have to sleep overnight?

  19. I think I’ve been to all except Åland. We used to hike a lot so pretty sure I’ve been to all the national parks

  20. I’ve been to all of them but I’ve definitely not been thorough enough to rank any of them above others. It’s a whole different experience to live somewhere for 10+ years versus visit a city for a few days.

  21. I lived so far in Lappeenranta, Oulu and now Tampere✌️, Visited pretty much everywhere.

  22. Nope. I have lived in Päijät-Häme (Lahti), Varsinais-Suomi (Uusikaupunki) and I now live in Uusimaa (Porvoo), and I’ve visited Pirkanmaa (Tampere), Kainuu (Kajaani and Paltaniemi), Kymenlaakso (Kouvola and Virokoski), Etelä-Savo (Mäntyharju and Voikoski) and Pohjois-Savo (Leppävirta, Kuopio and Varkaus)

I’ve driven through Keski-Suomi and Kanta-Häme, but that doesn’t count

I have a scratch off map of Finnish regions at home on which I keep track

  23. Not even half I think? Pretty much the entire south is unvisited. I’ve been living here for over 20 years… I’m just not much of a traveller.

The majority of visits has been were work has taken me: Helsinki, Imatra, joensuu and tampere. Or friends and family: vaasa and lahti.
