  7. What’s the point of surrendering land to fascist russia if they just come back for more in a few years time?

    They already agreed to current borders in 1991 and 1994 (Budapest memorandum).

    Then they invaded Crimea and part of Donbas in 2014.

    Then they came back for more in 2022.

    You’d have to be amazingly stupid to think that simply giving russia what they want is any sort of a solution.

  11. Putin is a serial Liar. Just look at the promises he made and the result of such promises. If Ukraine gives the Donbass region. What to say they wouldn’t want more of Ukraine in the future. They already got a taste when they took Crimea with Europe doing nothing about it. Now they want the Donbass. Will they still make a deal when Putin comes back a couple of years later, wanting more?

    Trump: “Ok, how about you just give the russians what they want.”

    Zelenskyy: “that’s not peace, that’s surrender. No.”

    Trump: “Ok ok ok… so here’s my next idea: Let the russians do what they want.”

    Zelenskyy: “That’s the same thing you said last time, no.”

    Trump: “Ok, hear me out, I’ve got a great plan this time and here it is: Russia gets everything it wants.”

    Zelenskyy: “Why am I even talking to you?”

  16. A dangerous precedent has been set. First, Georgia. Then, Crimea. Now, eastern Ukraine. What will Putin take next, if he sees his opponents will eventually acquiesce to his demands? He’ll gladly trade countless Russian lives, and those of other innocent people, to expand his sphere of influence.

  17. If you concede land for a Russian promise of peace, you have only delayed the war a few years.

    If you are not going to fight Russia when they are weak, why would you fight them after they are given time to refresh?

  18. Because Zelenskyy is smart enough to know that when dictators get what they want inch by inch, they will never stop. We’ve been here before. Putin doesn’t want peace; he wants all of Ukraine. A peace deal won’t last.

    A true compromise where both get something they need but lose something they want.

    While keeping the Donbas would be great, the area has been war-torn and degraded since the fall of the USSR. It had the highest percentage of pro-russians. Crimea has, unfortunately, been integrated with Russia for a decade now.

    Security is existential, and NATO would prevent this from ever happening again.

    Putin NEEDS territorial gains. He cant end the war with all those deaths for absolutely nothing – his regime will fall. His Budapest memorandum conspiracy theory was the basis, but he changed the narrative enough that the Donbas and Crimea would be a win.

    While preventing NATO expansion would be great for Putin, its not like Ukraine would be the first NATO neighbor. Restricting placement of nuclear weapons and deployment of offensive forces in Ukraine can be discussed diplomatically.
