Palestinians condemn Israel’s Ben-Gvir over Marwan Barghouti threat • FRANCE 24 English

is the first sighting in a decade of the man many once thought could be the leader of a possible Palestinian state. In video footage footage released Thursday, Israel’s far-right national security minister visited Marwan Barguti known for his leading role in the second inif well behind bars rather. Now itar Bengir was seen threatening Barguti in his jail cell. He’s serving five life sentences for what Israeli officials say was his involvement in planning attacks that left five civilians dead. The Palestinian political figure uh appeared to be part in particularly poor condition, visibly gaunt and weak as Ben told him that Israel would, I quote, wipe out anyone that messes with the nation. For more, take a listen. Anyone who attacks the people of Israel, who murders our children, who murders our women, we will erase them. You have to know this. It has always been this way. You will not defeat us. Well, for the details, then we’re going to cross now to our correspondent Noga Tarnipolski in Jerusalem. Hi, Nogga. So, I mean, why why Barguti? What message do you think Ben is is trying to get across with this video? Well, um, this is the latest in a line of very, um, I would say harsh and directed messaging issued by Israeli leaders in the last week in response to the announcement by France and the UK and Canada and other allied nations that they plan on recognizing a Palestinian state um, next month at the United Nations General Assembly. And so various Israeli leaders from uh Prime Minister Netanyahu who announced a week ago then didn’t follow through but announced that he was going to uh give orders to the Israeli army to occupy all of Gaza through the finance minister who said he was going to bury the possibility of a Palestinian state. And now this um really somewhat stunning video by the minister in charge of police in Israel, the national security minister. Um I don’t know if what he did was illegal, but it’s an evident abuse of his position to enter the individual jail cell of a convicted criminal and threaten him personally and videotape it and release it. It really gives you an indication of the level that the Israeli government is stooping to. and also I think how stressed they are by all of these allied nations announcing as a punitive measure against Israel at least as much as a positive message towards Palestinians that they plan on recognizing a Palestinian state and Bargoti is a symbol of that future state. So like you said no I mean this is the latest in a long series of of of provocations you could say if not abuses that we’ve seen from Israeli leaders over the past week. So I mean does that suggest that that uh pressure from the international and domestic community again as we’ve discussed time and time again is not really doing anything to change uh the direction of this government? Absolutely not. The Israeli government appears to be more and more defiant and more and more lawless internally and externally as the days go by. and Israelis in fact today which is the first day of the weekend here are girding for a national strike on Sunday a strike demanding an end to the war in Gaza and the return of the hostages. Um the Israeli people are very firm over several months now in their opposition to the direction the government is taking and in response to that internal pressure the government seems to be going more and more extreme. So as much as there are, you know, Israel is increasingly isolated on the international scene, the government is also isolating itself or even I would say almost operating in a space that is distinct from that of the people of the state. Palestinian officials have condemned far-right Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir’s taunting visit to the jail cell of long-imprisoned Fatah leader Marwan Barghouti. Footage of the visit shared on social media on Thursday showed the minister making threatening remarks to the 66-year-old. France24 Noga Tarnopolsky reports the latest.

Gaza city as is Khan Yonus are being heavily bombarded, entire buildings and neighborhoods are being blown up and destroyed, more than 300 in Hai Al-Zaytoon in Gaza city, every day, buildings in Gaza are destroyed so people wouldn't have anywhere to get back to, Palestinians are being targeted daily there and all over Gaza, especially near and in the so-called aid sites ran by the GHF.

  17. Marwan Barghouti was one of the few Palestinians brave enough to back a 2-state solution. He was not close to Hamas, and as a member of Fatah he was not a Muslim fundamentalist. Yet, he was extremely popular amongst Palestinians. That is why Israel crushed him. They did not want someone who could take over from Arafat; someone who they could make peace with. They preferred the extremists of Hamas because that meant they would never have to negotiate. The right wing politicians in Israel, just like Hamas, don't want peace. They know that in times of peace they would never get any votes or power or money.

Just so everyone understands, since it won't be explained to you here: Marwan Barghouti was the leading political representative of Fatah during the second intifada, and was widely expected to lead Fatah to a political victory in the 2005 election. Ariel Sharon decided to promote Hamas by bombing Fatah-run police stations, television stations, and other government related services. Barghouti was seized by Israel and tried for five murders he was supposed to have coordinated. By comparison, some 60,000 might well be dead already due to the attacks coordinated by Netanyahu. With it's ability to govern under literal attack by Israel, and with its most prominent and popular politician in prison, Fatah was unable to effectively campaign, and the "anti-corruption" party of Hamas won a small majority in the 2005 election. That was the last election held in Gaza.

    Israel, under Sharon and Netanyahu, has created the conditions under which Hamas came to power, consolidated power, and obtained weapons and materiel. This disgusting and illegal act by Ben-Gvir – a militant "settler" (itself a euphemism for genocidal nationalist) is meant to promote him as a tough guy, standing up to Hamas and Hezbollah militants, when in fact Barghouti represents the deliberate sabotage of the last political movement in Gaza dedicated to peaceful coexistence with Israel. And why was this done? We need only look to what Netanyahu himself said, quoted in Ha'aretz: if one is opposed to the two state solution (as Netanyahu and his far right religious nutjob supporters are) one must SUPPORT Hamas.

    Hamas is a monster largely of Israel's own creation, and this vile act of cowardly propaganda by Ben-Gvir is a celebration of it.
