YORBA LINDA, Calif. (KABC) — In an interview with Eyewitness News, Southern California Rep. Young Kim slammed Gov. Gavin Newsom and California Democrats’ mid-decade push for redistricting.
“I believe this is really a Sacramento power grab,” said Kim, who represents parts of Orange, San Bernardino and Riverside counties.
“I would like to see Gov. Newsom paying attention to addressing the critical needs that our state of California is facing,” the Republican congresswoman said. “We have problems with the homelessness issue. We have high inflation.
“Whatever happens, wherever the lines are drawn, wherever they put me, I am committed and determined to do the best job I can.”
Kim has served in Congress since 2021. If the California legislature passes the proposed maps, her district – which includes Chino Hills and as far south as Laguna Niguel – could be extended as far as Lake Elsinore and Menifee.
Eyewitness News interviewed the congresswoman at the Nixon Presidential Library in Orange County following a private roundtable on critical minerals supply chains.
She addressed her support for President Donald Trump’s immigration agenda.
“The minute that you cross the border, uninvited, illegally, you are an illegal alien. Myself included and many of my constituents are living here in the United States and they came her legally,” Kim said.
Eyewitness News also asked Kim about her vote for the Big Beautiful Bill. According to the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office, 31,000 of Kim’s constituents could lose their Medicaid and 15,000 could lose food assistance.
“It is not true,” she said. “Mark my words. The only people that maybe will be taken off the program are those illegal aliens and adults between the ages of 19 and 64, able-bodied adults without dependents who should be getting back to work.”
The California legislature is expected to vote on the redistributing proposal later this week.
