  1. If you think that’s tough, now they make them take a 300 mile hike and a boat ride!

  2. We just spent a week in London from the US. It was quite eye opening riding in Uber’s as so many streets in London aparently change names, and meander, driving around was fun. This is super impressive, that he even would know the names of each street let alone how to get there mentally.

  3. They have to memorise 25,000 road names and 30,000 popular landmarks. But not only that, also how they all link together. Now that’s impressive!

  4. I kept up with him through about 75% of that route, just from being a multi-drop driver for a good few years.

I could actually visualize my routes that accurately when I was working out in Essex, Romford, Dagenham, Epping, Hainault sorts of areas, and most in-between, but there’s a lot less to cram in your hippocampus.

  5. I really like the Jim Bowen-esque nature of the invigilator. He wants him to get it, he wants him to be right.

“Let’s have a look at what you could have won…”

BONUS FACT: if the contestants didn’t win bully’s star prize, the theme tune was played in a minor key.

  6. My father passed this exam in less than 6 months the absolute beast. RIP 1997 Peter W x

  7. He meant Beak Street right? He’s gone past Berwick Street, regardless of if one-way.

  8. The part of their brain that deals with memory is enlarged by being exercised like this. It’s incredible how they do it. The hippocampus, a part of the brain that can grow new cells, even into old age.

Some waiters have a similar skill. I saw one waiter memorise a table of 20 diners, all with different orders. Nobody there could believe he did it properly as he didn’t write anything down but when the food came he delivered it to the right ppl, and it was starters and mains.
