The article highlights Finland's past role as a diplomatic heavyweight, such as hosting the 1975 Peace Conference. All I can say is, thank goodness your president can play golf (and he's apparently quite good at it.) I am just surprised that golf is relatively popular in Finland, considering your climate.

  3. I would argue that having a 1300km border with Russia and having a strong 800.000 soldier wartime army with Europes largest artillery is a strong case to include Finland in any talks about Russia and Europe.

    And golf if the talks include Trump.

  4. Considering our climate? We have often warm and pleasant summers. This is not Svalbard.

  5. The real reason is Trump personally likes president Stubb. Stubb is golfer like Trump and generally knows how to handle him. He has a nickname “Trump whisperer”

  8. I apologize if Alexander Stubb isn’t popular there in Finland but I thought he handled himself exceptionally at the meeting. He spoke very clearly & straight forward about Finland having a lot of experience with Russia.

    I am really glad Stubb was there to share that expertise.

  9. Finland is a very athletic, sports focused country and culture. They are of course punch well above their weight in hockey and even basketball, track and tennis. It’s a country of six million inhabitants that can go toe-to-toe with the USA and Canada. The USA has 50x the population and Canada still has 6x the population and is hockey-crazed as they invented the sport. I’m not surprised they produce excellent golfers as well. It goes to show how lowly and pathetically the rest of us—North America and continental Europe/UK—value physical fitness and athletics.

  10. I’ts not many months that are not playable due to snow, especially in the south. And if you really want to play during winter you can go Snow Golfing. Yes it’s a thing 😀

    Sorry it’s only in Finnish, so I linked directly to the album. Rules doesn’t seem to be different, but they recommend a colorful golf ball, not a white one. 🙂

    I have a feeling the competitions are not as serious as normal golf.

Apart from the Trump golf buddy quality, Finland is a prime example of what will be asked from Ukraine, as stated by the president himself, we found a way in 1944, and will find a way in 2025 i.e concede territory to remain an independent entity, and build defensive forces just in case the neighbor want to try again. The message and symbolic was quite clear.

  12. Finland buying F35s for several billions, investing much money in US is probably not an disadvantage either given how much Trump care about trade balance etc. Maybe more important than the golf.

  14. The seat is well deserved. Also, Finland basically can represent all the Nordics as we all work well together for many decades. Still, was funny the senile orangeman forgot what President Stubb looked like. The felon is at the end of his all-marbles-in state.

  16. He was well placed at the table next to Zelenskyy facing Trump at that meeting.
    The incentives for Trump to change his course are set up. If he doesn’t take the deal we know he is definitely controlled by Kremlin.
    And so does the world.
