The European Union is preparing its 19th package of sanctions against Russia, which could be finalized by September, EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas announced on August 19.

The EU will also continue targeting Russia’s war economy. The next sanctions package against Moscow should be ready by next month.

“The unity among EU leaders in today’s virtual Summit was palpable. Everyone is committed to a lasting peace that protects both Ukraine’s and Europe’s vital security interests,” Kallas said on X.

She stressed that Russian leader Vladimir Putin “cannot be trusted to honour any promise or commitment,” underscoring the need for “strong and credible” security guarantees to prevent Moscow from regrouping and launching future attacks.

According to Kallas, the EU will support those guarantees by training Ukrainian troops and bolstering Ukraine’s defense industry.

“The EU will also continue targeting Russia’s war economy. The next sanctions package against Moscow should be ready by next month,” she added.

“I have placed these topics at the top of our agenda for discussions next week among EU foreign and defence ministers,” Kallas concluded.

Her statement followed high-level discussions on August 18 between US President Donald Trump, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and several European leaders focused on advancing negotiations toward peace.

Previously, it was reported that French President Emmanuel Macron also stated Western nations are prepared to increase pressure on Russia if ongoing negotiations do not produce results.
