VALLETTA (MALTA) (ITALPRESS/MNA) – The Nationalist Party, Malta’s main Opposition, is searching for a new leader after MPs Alex Borg and Adrian Delia formally submitted their nominations on Tuesday.
Both contenders cleared the party’s verification process and will now face off in a vote on Saturday, 6 September. Only PN members with valid membership cards may cast their ballot during the specially convened general convention.
Speaking to journalists after filing their paperwork, Borg urged supporters to embrace unity regardless of the outcome. “There will be no loser. My love is not for the party only, but for Malta and Gozo. The country expects a united party for a proper alternative to the government,” he said. Borg stressed his success in Gozo stemmed from working closely with people and communities. He argued the PN must adopt a “winning mentality” aimed at the next general election, not one five years away.
Delia, meanwhile, promoted his campaign slogan “nirbħu” (winning), stressing the PN must win back the youth, disillusioned voters, and the public’s trust. “We should not expect to govern, but must work towards winning the people’s confidence in our leadership,” he said.
Party officials confirmed two televised debates will be aired on party’s television station – NET TV in the run-up to the vote. However, both candidates are barred from giving interviews to other media outlets during the campaign.
