  1. From reporter Paul Blumenthal:

Texas state Rep. Nicole Collier filed a writ of habeas corpus on Tuesday in the district court of Travis County, Texas, claiming the state legislature’s Republican majority has unlawfully detained her in the state Capitol after she refused to consent to 24-hour police surveillance.

Collier, a Democrat representing Fort Worth, is one of over 50 Texas Democratic legislators who fled the state on Aug. 3 to block Republicans from enacting a new congressional map at President Donald Trump’s urging to create five new GOP seats ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.

  2. She should sue, her rights are definitely being violated when she is being forced to stay in the capital building.

  3. She should, Texas republicans are holding her hostage.

  4. This is fucking exhausting. How much more insane is this bullshit going to get?

  5. What the actual fuck is happening, this story is insane.

  6. Remember that Republicans gleefully voted for this

  7. This seems like a cruel prank that you only see in movies from high school bullies, not something adults would actually do in real life. And to think that some people are ok with this behavior from their state elected officials really makes it over the top batshit crazy.

  8. In a just world this would be in front of a judge right now who’d be issuing a restraining order against the state Republicans and whichever clown college educated police agency their legislature is sending to enforce their ‘rule’.

  9. Why would anyone agree to a prison guard “escorting” you!

  10. If this were me, there would be one phone call home saying “hey I’ve got a legal battle to fight, hold down the fort and I’ll be home soon.” and I would dump literally every resource I had into sueing the everloving shit out of everyone who barred my exit.

  11. Why didn’t all of them stay? Signing that form is signing away the rights of American citizens. They could of at least held out for 24 hours to make a stand.

Anyone that signed the form is directly at odds with American democracy.

If it isn’t illegal, no one should be able to make you comply to something under threat of arrest. It’s downright at odds to law and order, which Republicans love to espouse as their highest belief.

  12. This is probably going to be an easy case for the Democrat, but I highly expect the accused to point the finger and put the blame on the janator, who they will make the scape goat.

  13. White republican woman unlawfully detains black democratic colleague – the masks are off y’all

  14. This is outrageous. But I don’t see enough scorn directed at her Democratic colleagues. They all happily signed the permission slip and made friends with their jailers before leaving. Every single one of them should have refused and remained with Collier in solidarity.

  15. These Democrats should flee the state for their own safety, they are being persued by armed men, falsely imprisoned, bullied, coerced and intimidated. They should have called the Republicans bluff and not signed, what would they arrest them, shoot them? It was a line in the sand and they should have forced their hand. Instead they bowed their heads and did what they were told. They are standing by while the Texas voters are being nullified. Democracy??

  16. Does this hostage have access to food, water, and a toilet?

  17. Republicans don’t care about repercussions because they will achieve their goal of gerrymandering the state. The lawsuit will be small potatoes because the crooked judges are in Trump’s pocket anyway.

  18. Imagine this in reverse, we’d have another j6 happening.

  19. Good on her. I’m certain that she never agreed to false imprisonment. Happy for her backbone.

  20. I wouldn’t sign it either and would leave, go ahead and arrest me. I doubt she’ll win , if there was law and order she would

  21. “…no such power is conferred on the Legislature to arrest or otherwise compel a member who is currently present (and not absent) to stay”

    Dolores Umbridge: “For now…”

  22. Good on her for taking a stand.

Reptilians have become the party of insanity.

Edit: Autocorrect messed up but I find it amusing so I’m leaving it in. I, for one, welcome our new reptilian overlords!

  23. I would like to know where her nutless fellow democrats are band together and get her out of the building those spine less dems are the problem it seems this is a fucking joke

  24. She’s a woman and black and they are indeed racist AF.

  25. This is indeed the stupidest timeline. Whoever got us here needs a paddlin’

  26. Rep. Nicole Collier is stepping into the footsteps of other courageous black women, who said no to power.

Her voters should be proud of her and be out in front of the “prison” demanding her freedom. I know, I would.
