Austria has announced additional humanitarian support for Ukraine, expanding its assistance at a crucial time.

The decision was announced by Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs via Telegram on August 20.

During her visit to Odesa on Wednesday, Austrian Foreign Minister Beate Meinl-Reisinger confirmed that Austria will allocate about $2.22 million in humanitarian aid. She also announced Austria’s decision to join the civil protection shelter coalition, an initiative aimed at safeguarding civilians from Russian attacks.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha expressed deep gratitude for Austria’s continued commitment. He underscored the importance of Vienna’s latest decision, highlighting that it further strengthens humanitarian cooperation between the two countries.

Sybiha also extended thanks to Austria, the governments of its federal states, and charitable foundations for organizing rehabilitation holidays for Ukrainian children affected by the war. From 2022 to 2024, nearly 1,480 children were able to spend time in Austria as part of these programs.

“Another 550 Ukrainian children are expected to be hosted by Austria this year. And this, too, is support for life. There are no other people’s children. Ukrainian children are Europe’s future,” the minister emphasized.

Beyond humanitarian aid, the ministers devoted special attention to the role of Austrian expertise in Ukraine’s reconstruction. In particular, they discussed the involvement of Austria’s architectural school in Odesa, which will play a key part in restoring and modernizing the country’s vital port city.

Earlier, Beate Meinl-Reisinger urged a public debate on the country’s long-standing policy of neutrality, arguing that it no longer ensures national security amid rising geopolitical instability and an increasingly aggressive Russia.
