Burlington officials and local businesses worked together to keep dialysis patients comfortable after their treatment center was evacuated due to a natural gas leak, according to the Burlington Fire Department.Crews said they responded to the scene at DaVita Dialysis on Heather Road around 12:20 p.m. Wednesday. Firefighters said they arrived to find an odor of natural gas inside the building. Crews then assisted DaVita staff in evacuating the 20 patients on site who were receiving dialysis treatment. Fire personnel set up tents and shade awnings with electric fans to keep building occupants comfortable while outside. Firefighters and EMS personnel worked with DaVita staff to arrange transportation for patients who needed to go to an alternate dialysis center and assisted with medical monitoring of the building occupants. Alamance County Transportation Authority arrived at the scene and assisted transporting two patients to other centers. Additional medical supplies were brought to the scene due to the number of dialysis patients evacuated. Neighboring businesses like LabCorp brought cases of bottled water and Home Depot provided temporary shelter with additional pop-up tents.Piedmont Natural Gas responded to the scene and repaired the leak, allowing patients back inside after about an hour. The Burlington Fire Department was assisted in its response by Burlington Emergency Management, Piedmont Natural Gas, and Alamance County EMS.
