Iran’s navy began holding major maneuvers on August 21, for the first time since the 12-day war between Tehran and Israel ended two months ago.

Iranian state radio reported that warships, submarines and naval units are taking part in two-day exercises in the Gulf of Oman.

The exercises, according to the military, focus on testing missiles, cruise missiles and combat drones.

Israel attacked Iran on June 13, bombing targets across the country. The Israeli government said the strikes were to prevent the Islamic Republic from building a nuclear bomb. Iran responded with missile attacks on Israeli cities.

After 12 days of war, during which the United States attacked key Iranian nuclear facilities with powerful conventional weapons, a ceasefire was then reached.

Iran’s navy remained largely untouched by the country-wide airstrikes.

Before the Israeli attacks, Washington and Tehran had held negotiations for a new nuclear deal, but the nearly two-month talks failed to produce a result before war broke out.

Finally, Germany, France, and the United Kingdom have called on the government in Tehran to negotiate in order to avoid further military escalation.

However, the Iranian leadership remains skeptical and has set preconditions for negotiations, including security guarantees.
