Germany was a Covid ‘poster child.’ Now it’s seeing 50,000 cases a day, prompting a dramatic warning

Does nobody remember the absolute clusterfuck we had for the most of last year? Even now a ton of things are still not well structured, from reporting when you’re suspecting an infection to everything else.

Vaccination, albeit slow, was probably the best handled aspect of the whole thing – and even that had its issues.

  2. The problem is that the Cov Pass is too easily faked, download a sample from the internet or take a screenshot from a friends phone. It’s that easy, no one checks to see if it’s legit. Compare this to where my family lives, you have to show id and have it scanned, they are super strict and it shows, Last I checked Ontario Canada was 15/100,000, wee bit lower than Germany.

  3. Police should roam restaurants and shops in disguise to see if staff check vaccination certifications properly. Because from personal experience, I can tell that they don’t give a fuck about checking. Fines for such places should be high.

  4. A dramatic warning that vaccine passports do not work, are authoritarian and that the virus is now endemic like seasonal flu?

Oh no nono no conspiracies allowed.

  5. A kid in my son’s class tested positive yesterday. They just sent the kid home and carried on. What could go wrong?

  6. Yeah, I was also under the impression that many viewed us as a “poster child” but really after the initial Lockdown it was just fuckup, particularism and bullshit up to this point. So, uh, yeah. Glad the international press has finally caught on, I guess.

  7. I really don’t know how meaningful case numbers are now with the vaccine rolled out to (most) of the population. Hospitalisation rates and severe cases should be more important statistics.

  8. Germany was never the post child, it dragged its feet and made no use of any of the advance warning given by Asian countries that were already going into lockdowns, for starters. It wasn’t until Italy forced Germany’s hand that they even started to do anything. That being said, it did do better than a lot of other countries, but that’s more a reflection of how pathetic those countries responses were rather than as a shining example of success for Germany.

This whole pandemic has felt like one country trying to find another country doing worse than itself to pat itself on the back for a job well done instead of actually using its poor performance as a motivator to do better.

If you want examples of countries that acted responsibly, there’s at least South Korea, New Zealand, Australia before it completely lost the plot, etc. none of which were in the EU.

  9. Chill everyone. This is just the media’s ploy to make everyone more tense and anxious. Covid situation is much better than before, thankfully.

  10. In the southwest (Baden-Württemberg) they completely stopped contact tracing and also stopped sending quarantine orders to positive tested people. No more orders and instructions on quarantine. They just say in general all people with a positive test should look up the latest rules by themselves and do the right things with self-qurantine. They should inform their contacts by themselves to protect them. In case you have a job, of course u need a quarantine proof for it and don’t get it… well, you now have to contact the local city police for that manually and proof to them again that you are PCR positive and then they might write you the proof. Of course not digitally and you also should not come in by yourself either. So… It is a mess. By the way: they closed all vaccination centers, because local doctors should do the vaccinations now. So many awful wrong decisions here.

We had a good covid strategy for literally two months. After that it was absolute garbage.
